4-0 Shutout Best Game Yet
Posted November 8, 2008
While I was watching this game tonight, I thought to myself that this is definitely the best I've seen the Blades play this season.
They just put everything together -- defense, blocking shots, physical play, penalty kill, sound offense, stellar goaltending -- in tonight's win.
After the game, coach Malcolm Cameron agreed that tonight was the best overall game of the season so far.
"Without a doubt," he said. "Lots of hard work ... guys needed to see it wouldn't take away from our offense to play that greasy, gritty style."
Doesn't mean we'll see this every put-together of a game every night. And yes, Gwinnett is down this year from its usual level of talent. But enjoy this game for what it was.
Everyone has been waiting to see the Blades' talented roster come out and play as a team -- and they did just that tonight. Guys are starting to know where their teammates are on the ice, and tonight's passing was crisp -- few of the neutral zone turnovers we saw earlier in the season.
Of course you have to mention Anton Khudobin, who had his second stellar night in net in a row. I was surprised to see Dave Leggio on the bench, but everything worked out with Khudobin in net. Sometimes it's nice to give a goalie back-to-back starts and help him get on a roll a little bit.
We'll still see Leggio start next weekend, I'd think.
Cameron said he didn't decide to start Khudobin until this morning's pregame skate.
"He told me we'll see how you feel, and if you're ready to play, you'll get the start," Khudobin said, and the 22-year-old did all he could to show he wanted the job.
"He looked really energized and ready to play," Cameron said of Khudobin this morning. "Sometimes you can just tell who's ready to go."
But Cameron went on to emphasize that the Blades have two good goalies and talked up Leggio's play in Monday's win.
Hard to point out too many individuals tonight, because the team effort was the key part. But here's a few ...
- Brad Zanon: I noticed his multiple, body-sacrificing shot blocks in the second period, and Khudobin mentioned Zanon's blocking after the game, too. This guy doesn't get much press, but he's been a steady, solid presence on the D so far.
- Kevin Baker: Great pass out to Mike Grenzy on the point for the first third period goal, and then he comes right back to score a gritty goal less than three minutes later.
The Blades have been a little lax in the third period lately, allowing a lot of shots for the opposition, but tonight's story was exactly the opposite -- and Baker led the charge.
The third period tonight was the biggest reason why this was the best complete game of the season thus far.
- Anton Khudobin: I don't really have to say why but ... another great performance. He looked a lot more confident and less shaky than he did earlier this season, and he reiterated that after the game.
"The first couple games I didn't really feel that good," Khudobin said. "Now I can feel the puck ... I can see the puck. And the (defensemen) helped me out a lot ... did you see all those blocked shots?"
Yes, we did. But Khudobin still had to make quite a few acrobatic saves, with one particularly nice glove save that looked like a Willie Mays catch in the outfield.
- Andrew Fournier, Mathieu Roy, Colin Nicholson: Cameron said these three were "as sharp as they could be" this weekend. Roy it showed with two assists tonight and a goal last night -- Nicholson of course had the nice SH goal that was a huge momentum boost tonight. Don't see Fournier as much in the scoresheets, but this rookie is making consistently good decisions on the ice.
- Jon Paiement, Yannick Tifu: These two got the scoring started tonight. Both very talented players. Both will likely not spend their entire season in the ECHL -- but hey, the Blades love every game they get with these two. Both very good with the puck -- Tifu had a few stickhandling moves tonight that belong on the highlight reel.

Great Report AB. The Goaltending has been stellar lately. The way the team is continuing to Jell together will only continue with time. Add in the Long Roadtrip coming soon and there should be many more good things to come from this team, as they can be the BAD GUYS for many days and Barns on this long upcoming roadtrip and play "us" (The Team)against the ECHL! Drums remain in storage........................

Great game tonight, Blades! Way to go Boys! Big Ern, the legs were pumping. Ross Carlson, if anyone deserved a star tonight, you are the man. Sustained pressure throughout the game, 18 third-period shots; excellent performance. Keep it going, Blades!

Big question last night after the game was: Why didn't Zanon get a Star of the game? He certainly deserved it...more so than 2 of the others with the "whatever it takes" attitude he displayed last night.
Zanon you rocked last night. Hope you're moving and groovin' today though I'm thinking you're "a tad" sore!
Epson salts anyone...

The Stingrays are now the 2nd place team in the south, 1 point behind Florida.
Actually, the Stingrays are the #1 team in the south in winning percentage.
The Stingrays got their top 2 goalies back from Hershey, the two guys Florida didn't have to face, and all they did was go 3-0 with 0.67 GAA this week.

The boys are now playing quality hockey. It was inevitable that they begin clicking once they had a chance to play together.... But it won't be a cake walk.
Khudobin is a quality goalie who will only get better this year.
Grenzy doubles last years scoring production in the first 9 games....
Way to play boys.

Who was your 1st choice ? ? ? ?
#38 Posted by WYMAN on November 10, 2008 at 4:10 p.m. (Suggest removal)
From 9/30/08----------------
Travis joins the Everblades after four years in the college ranks. The last two seasons saw the Wilton, New Hampshire native skate with the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The 24-year-old finished off last season by scoring 21 points (12g, 9a) in 37 games. In 2006-07 the 6-foot-3, 213-pound forward saw his season limited to just 18 games because of injury, but managed 14 points (4g, 10a).
“Dan is someone we’re real excited about seeing in Florida.” Cameron added. “He’s a big, strong power forward who drives the net hard. He plays hard, and, like Bowers, he is gaining experience right now by skating in the AHL’s Worcester Sharks training camp.”
Travis, who was a 5th round draft pick by the Florida Panthers in the 2003 NHL entry draft, began his collegiate hockey career at the University of New Hampshire. In his freshman and sophomore seasons Travis combined to score seven points in 23 games.

> EXPLAINING OUR UNITED STATES TAXING SYSTEM WITH BEER
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are
all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your
daily beers by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.' The group
still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first
four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide
the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They
realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the Sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and
he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
#55 Posted by CSA on November 11, 2008 at 9:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Each of the six was better off than before and the first four continued
to drink for free, but once outside the restaurant, the men began to
compare their savings. 'I only got a dollar out of the $20,' declared
the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, but he got $10!' 'Yeah, that's right, 'exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got TEN times more than I!' 'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back
when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!' 'Wait a minute,'
yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The
system exploits the poor!'
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay
the bill, they discovered something very important....they didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes DO get the most benefit from a tax reduction. They also PAY more than the rest. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore.
In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

CSA, I believe it is called payback...for all the years you rained on our parade. You were so negative for all that time that it is just natural for the rest of us to be negative. But no matter what we show up, win or lose. It appears you only show up when the team is winning and then it is to just attack. The person that would debate or just simply state an opinion but still respect everybody elses opinion seems to have stayed in Georgia. Shame, he used to be a fun guy to discuss hockey with.

I was waiting for you to say this BHF.
Kinda funny how I gave GF all the time in the world--to pre Blog days-- to prove himself as a guy who couldnt get the job done.
Anyone with the slightest hockey sense could see that
over the last 3 seasons
At that time, I couldnt and chose support the product that was on the ice after GF proved himself
See, its called having a conviction
Now, the slate is wiped clean with the hiring of a new coach. Thats what you fail to see or care to acknowledge
And thats your choice
It would be nice to give MC the same lattitude as HC of the Everblades as GF was his 1st few seasons
But it must be pointed out that you, MFH, Chip and at times Bussy, the core contingent of this blog, have been the most divisive since the MC hiring.
As opposed to those of us who have turned the page, let the past stay in the past and welcomed the latest chapter of the Everblades which is still in its infancy.
And doing quite well I might add
Carry on....

CSA,
Looks like you took Professor Kamerschen's online course when you were housed in GA....
How would this scenario work out, 5 guys go to a Blades game:
1) The first one brings a Flask of Whiskey with him and only buys 1 coke to flavor it during the night.
2) Another is with his elderly relative and will say he left his wallet in the car and have the old guy foot his bill througout the night.
3) The Third gets "jacked up" on Old Milwaukee and "buds" BEFORE the game and then bums a few beers off different people througout the night, never hitting the same on twice.
4) This guy will go up to breakaways or sneak into the cypress club, will either buddy up to someone at the bar or "run a tab" when the intermission is almost over will say he needs to use the restroom, and will leave his dollar store sun glasses on the bar so as not to raise suspicion.
5) He comes to the game pays for parking BUYS a few "doubles" and will also throw a free beer to one or two guys or gals during the evening...

I have said from the beginning that I am going to give MC some games but I don't have to like how he is doing some things and as a STH I have concerns with the underlying sneakiness and I can say that without calling you or anybody else names. There is a pattern to your attacks and one time when you are at a game, we can talk about it.

CSA.... I'll remain positive as long as I see effort. That is what did me in last year...lack of effort. This year, so far, the hiring of Cameron, the addition of quality players, the deletion of dead weight and the effort on the ice has been top notch. I don't expect a win every night. First, that is not going to happen. Second, with a few teams gone, everyone got better. But as long as I see effort each night (and it has happened so far, even in the losses), I'll stay positive. Based on the make-up of the team and the effort so far, most on the blog are happy with the results. It's only a few who simply moan and groan because that's all they know how to do. Kind of keeps the attention on themselves....

Ya you know...I have to mention...with lines dwindling at concessions, in the light of a poor economic environment, will someone please get a bright idea? Consider lowering pricing so sales improve and both sides can enjoy. Listen folks...if you ever went to business school there is such a thing as price elasticity...we will only pay so much...but it's reached where too many are "turned off." Perhaps someone should think to do something about beer and food prices. AND I SINCERELY MEAN IT.
Now there are two sides to every coin. The on-ice product has been fantastic. I feel like I've been hibernating for years...so for that part, thank you goes out to the entire organization...

Philly - it is true even in the losses there was definite effort - high frustration for everyone - but a solid effort. I am quite pleased with the determination out there!
Mr. MFH - If it is MC's ego driving this train- SO BE IT! Then, I'm grateful for such an ego ... find me a handful of successful men who aren't ego driven ... MFH??? Come on now - I believe we have a case of the pot and the kettle.
CSA - very good financial post ;o) Love it!
