Six in a Row

Posted November 15, 2008

Gotta say, this team is getting to be pretty fun to watch. Tonight's game had it all: scoring, power-plays, shorthanded goals, a few fights, nice passing ...

Hard to touch on everything, but here's a few thoughts after the Augusta series:

1. PENALTY KILL: It's tough to play offense when you're down a man -- or two -- but the Blades have done this impressively. Note the shorthanded goals ...

Credit for the penalty killing goes a lot to the Blades two goalies and to the D, which is much upgraded from last season. A guy like Kyle Peto, a solid player who'd be in the game with most ECHL teams, was just scratched two days in a row.

Peter Metcalf and Doug O'Brien, however long they're here, are fun to watch out there. They don't make many mistakes, clean passes, physical play. Metcalf in particular, because he's less likely to be called up and has personal reasons (baby on the way) to stay in FLA, should be a huge part of this team down the stretch.

2. ROSS CARLSON: Guy who knows how to get in the holes and get those dirty goals, sort of like Preston Callander last season. May not have the stickhandling of Yannick Tifu or the speed of Ryan Lang, but Ross Carlson is one of those gritty players who knows how to score as well. And don't downplay the role of emotion: he was frustrated after last night and came out tonight on fire. Results in a hat trick.

3. GETTING PHYSICAL: The Blades have been pretty smart with this so far this season. It helps when you're playing with a lead, but they still have had few of the dumb penalties that plagued last year's team. They also held their own against an Augusta team might be the most physical in the division.

How much fun was it to finally see Brad Zanon drop the gloves? Actually, I'm not a huge fan of watching the guys smack each other (don't really like the threat of injuries) but Zanon has been playing physical all year, and you knew he'd be a good fighter once he got in one.

"I fight when I have to," Zanon said. "We needed a spark, and that's sort of my role ... I was really happy with the way we played physically this weekend."

Zanon had only played 14 pro games before this season, but he plays more experienced than that and rarely gets noticed for making mistakes. Another guy who will be important down the stretch.

4. GOALTENDING: Hard to say which goalie has had the better first month of the season. I thought Dave Leggio might get a second start in a row tonight, but Malcolm Cameron went with Khudobin. In some ways, it's gonna be tough to get each GK the PT they deserve if they keep up these stats. Khudobin wasn't flawless tonight, but he still looked good, especially on a couple kick saves.

5. QUIETER: Didn't see as much from captain and leading scorer Kevin Baker this weekend, or from newcomer Yannick Tifu. When you watch Tifu, it's clear he's a wizard with the puck. He also plays with a lot of emotion, which I think might sometimes distract him a little bit. That's the way I used to play basketball, so I know how too much emotion can detract from your game ...

But look for more big things from Tifu and Baker over the wknd, and from Ernie Hartlieb and Ryan Lang. It seemed Augusta sorta had a couple guys designated to tag Tifu and Baker among others this weekend, so maybe that contributed to their lack of scoring ... which is why it's all-the-more important that the Blades have the depth they do, and players like Carlson are there to back it up.

5. AARON BROCKLEHURST: Nice to see him get back in after being a healthy scratch last night. Obviously a talented d-man with a big offensive upside.

Don't wanna say the Blades didn't miss Jon Paiement on his call-up, but they're building quite a D here in Estero when you barely notice Paiement is gone.

6. UPCOMING ROAD TRIP: Should tell us a lot more about this year's Blades ... they'll be a lot more battle-tested by the time they're back at Germain.

The Rays do have a game in hand...Their next game is Wednesday in Charlotte

Gwinnett solidly in last place

Think they made a mistake in trading KWOL? (giggles)

The Jason Nobili watch is on in Reading. 4-9 overall, 5 losses in 6 games, give up 51 SOG and lose to last place Trenton 4-1

UGH!

Personally, I hope we stay in 2nd place all season. We're not NEARLY where we need to be "systems" wise, and it'll be easier for Jared to keep the guys' attention, if they don't think they're "all that". We're winning on superior talent and goaltending right now, but there's tons of room for improvement. Ya'll can have the internet bragging rights. I'd rather be second best...... for now.

AB- Thoughts on Gwinnett? 5th best team in the division ahead of only Augusta. Blades should sweep the next three on this homestand. Great momentum before heading north for the long road trip. Getting one fourth of their away schedule in one trip!

While the series is a long way off, the Johnstown Chiefs are off to their best start in forever.

The matchup becomes that much more enticing if Mike Sgroi returns to Johnstown if he gets sent down from the Syracuse Crunch by the end of February

For those not looking at Nascar or the NFL this afternoon, The 1st place Chiefs and their 7 game winning streak are at the Dayton Everblades @ 5:00 PM on B2

AB who said Zanon was the sleeper???

METCALF is just way to calm out there. His experiance and smart play makes him basically not replacable in my opinion. Either Fri. night or last night after the Blades scored a goal we won the faceoff and Metcalf took it deep into Augusta's zone. The crowd was still buzzing so why not keep it going. Smart thinking, very smart...

Jeff Dunne was activated off the 30 day IR and then traded to Gwinnett.

Speaking of Gwinnett, what is up with this:

Gwinnett:
Add Jeff Campbell, F suspension lifted
Add Lou Dickenson, F suspension lifted
Add Jamie Milam, D suspension lifted
Delete Jeff Campbell, F suspended by team
Delete Lou Dickenson, F suspended by team
Delete Jamie Milam, D suspended by team

There's a limit on how long you can suspend a player. They re-suspended them so they could keep their ECHL rights.

For all you dolts that think that socialism is going to be all warm and fuzzy and that our good comrads up in washington will keep themselves in check....

THINK AGAIN....open your eyes , if you think that this is america and THAT cant happen here, well, IT IS HAPPENING HERE. right here right now...it happening!!

And now for you BHF....
see hockey is like politics...our nation and our sport have been taken over by people that would, in order to keep thier power and position, sell this country /sport out...

Obama cares about as much about the good ole USA as Bettman cares about HOCKEY.

They both reached thier positions by promising "CHANGE"...well just as Bettman has come thru on his promise so shall Oboma...only with WORSE results!

So congrats comrads on your victory over freedom and welcome to the new PC era of marxism....Our new PC sport will fit RIGHT IN!

#23 Posted by SDW on November 17, 2008 at 5:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why wouldn't it be his request. He signed to play hockey and with it being his first yr pro, being a make believe assistant coach wasn't what I would think he had in mind. He wasn't hurt so why wouldn't he ask to be traded so he could play. Sticking him behind the bench like that was going to kill his pro start.

Sorry to interrupt your epiphany MFH, but its clear as can be.

Brocklehurst and Zanon was the best rookies-- better than Dunne, Cunningham, and Hagemo

Hagemo, Cunningham were released and traded, respectively

Even after the roster trmimming, Dunne couldnt earn any ice time because of the wealth of talent in front of him

Then throw in a few AHL donations and then a heist in acquiring Metcalf

Dunne wasnt was good as the multitude in front of him so he was traded.

I do admire your persistence and tenacity...

Even though its sadly misguided

I rewatched the game from Saturday night and there is are a couple things I can say about the team. This is a very very close team. In my opinion the tightest team the Blades have had and they are wearing the blue and green. Once MC figures out the blue and green then they will all be on the same page. So whatever Texas stuff is out there now, it is MC or Texas fans. These players are Blades players. And I am very happy to see it.

Khudobin's departure for Houston gives David Leggio his opportunity to shine. After 11 games, Khudobin has a save percentage of 0.940 compared to Leggio's of 0.936; not much difference. However, wins/losses, 5/1 for Khudobin to 3/2 for Leggio might make some take notice. Nonetheless, Leggio has shown himself to be more disciplined and focused around the net, particularly in puck handling and his stonewalling of Augusta during last weekend's shootout was very impressive. The next few games, on the road, are what every up-and-coming rookie hockey player needs and should want. Go Blades!

If there is a lasting memory for myself and Germain (TECO) Arena, it has to be the night of Dec. 23, 1998.

It was the Everblades against the Miami Matadors. My wife and I were sitting directly across from the team benches. I noticed that after most visiting team penalties a fan, sitting behind the penalty box, was “jawing” with their players through the glass. I soon realized that I knew two of the now “alleged” hecklers. They were, Joe Scott (now deceased), who was the “Joe” of the 96 K-Rock “Joe and Stan Show,” and Brian Howe, former lead singer of the group Bad Company, who resides in the area.

It was what I believe the second period, John Badduke, a designated “goon” for the Matadors, was penalized and sent to the box. Openly angry, Badduke entered the box. He was met by the “alleged” heckler, who I found out later to be, the honorable attorney Michael F. Hornung. Hornung appeared to say something to Badduke that I assumed was not entirely flattering.

Badduke, at that time turned, his back to his newfound fan and slammed his stick over his shoulder against the glass. If there ever was a building flaw in the arena, it was found at that time. There was about a one-inch gap between the Plexiglas sections surrounding the arena, and Baddukes stick found that gap that Hornung’s skull had been temporarily filling.

While I can’t say I heard the thud, I could see even at that distance, Hornung’s eyes roll to the back of his head, like that of a white shark feeding on a seal. Soon there was a commotion behind the bench, as a group led the attorney out of the arena.

My next viewing of Michael, who I can now call a friend, thankfully was not in a casket, but was of him and his two cronies coming out of the first aid room. Michael, visibly shaken and sporting a bloodstained gauze wrapped around his skull, looking much like one of pipers in the Battle of Waterloo, was being supported by both. Today, the lasting affects of that blow are known only to Michael and his family.

More self serving, "see my name in the paper" from the "honorable" (too funny) MFH....

AB: Can we change the name of the blog to MFH's corner?

Let's get back to hockey....

Craig Brush guest column: It's been a great 10 years at Germain Arena
By CRAIG BRUSH, Florida Everblades president and general manager
4:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2008
ESTERO — Ten years ago today, Germain Arena opened its doors with a hockey game between the Florida Everblades and the Charlotte Checkers.

While I do not remember a lot about the game (we did win) I do remember being overwhelmed with pride looking at the packed house that night. I had the same feeling a couple of months later when Elton John came to town and performed his magic.

When Peter Karmanos, Tom Thewes and I said we were going to build an arena and bring a hockey team here, there was no shortage of raised eyebrows. But thanks to the great people of Southwest Florida, here we are 10 years later.

I would like to say it has been a easy ride, but that would not be true. We have faced the same kinds of problems that any small business does — staffing issues, rising health care expenses, dramatic increases in energy costs and insurance premiums, and today a severe economic downturn. But through it all we have stuck to our vision of providing affordable family entertainment and recreational activities for all ages.

We want people to look forward to coming to Germain Arena and hope they leave with a smile on their faces.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, suiteholders and all of our season ticket holders for their support, especially those who have been with us from inception. I would also like to thank our dedicated staff, who spend countless hours preparing the building for the various events we host. Lastly, I would like to thank my wife, Kyle, who has been with me every step of this 10-year journey. Our food and beverage operation is her responsibility, and her job is far more difficult than mine.

A lot of great things have happened at the arena over the last 10 years, but there is still one big check mark yet to be made on the to-do list: We have to get that Kelly Cup.

This year’s team has all the ingredients to accomplish that goal — a driven coach, All-Star talent and a great work ethic.

Come out and cheer them on.

You will not be disappointed.

Craig Brush, Peter Karmanos and the late Thomas Thewes formed KTB Sports Inc. and built what is now Germain Arena 10 years ago. Brush is team president and general manager of the Florida Everblades hockey team, the building’s main tenant.

EBG is good for a giant Cookie

Bussyfan can stock the soft drinks.

What ever happened to BladesFlyGirl? She probably has some of those mini Pretzel and Peanut packets. She could provide them...it's not like they pass them out on the flights anymore.

What more do they need?
