That ought to tell us that our readers care passionately not only about the national and local political landscape; they care passionately about having the opportunity to express how and what they think, and they look to our letters columns and pages as daily town-hall meetings.
Editing all of that is both a responsibility and a privilege. The trick is knowing when to keep hands on or off.

They suspect it’s all a plot by Third World collectivist nations to cripple our economy. Global warming has lots of doubters. For example, in a commencement address a couple of years ago, the late author Michael Crichton remarked that if weather forecasts can’t be depended on for accurate predictions a few days ahead, why should we take seriously alarms about a global warming that won’t fully manifest itself until decades or even centuries from now?

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/nov/22/phil-lewis-testing-sunshine-florida/?partner=RSS</link><description>Editors of daily newspapers in Florida teamed this fall with the Associated Press to test local government’s adherence to public records laws.
Government — on the whole — got an F. Here’s how the test worked:
Newspaper reporters and student volunteers from various Florida universities tested the offices of school superintendent, county manager and sheriff in 56 of the state’s 67 counties. Each office was asked to produce copies of all e-mails that were produced in preparation of the 2008-09 fiscal-year budgets.

</title><link>http://naplesnews.com/news/2008/nov/22/ben-bova-despite-our-current-woes-we-can-be-thankf/?partner=RSS</link><description>This Thursday we celebrate Thanksgiving, that most typical of American holidays. Despite the wars and the economic fiasco that is shaking our nation, we have a lot to be thankful for. Personally, I’m thankful for that ancestor of mine who, five generations ago, left the threadbare, rock-filled hills of Calabria and came to America. He made a good choice and I’m very grateful for it.

Until now, it was only commercial planes that had to submit information — within 60 minutes of departure or arrival — about the passengers and crew aboard so security officials could check them against a terrorism watch list.

The passing of Amendment 2 was by the will of the people. America is still a nation of “we the people,” regardless of those who seek to overturn that notion. You rightly stated what we had already proclaimed prior to the election, “that Amendment 2 does not bar health or other benefits of same sex couples.” Thanks for confirming that information.

He negotiated the secret buyout of Carnegie Steel to a group of financiers led by J.P. Morgan and became president of U.S. Steel. But, he was notorious for his fast-lane lifestyle of fancy parties, high-stakes gambling and a string of extramarital affairs. He went through his fortune of about $400 million (in modern dollars) during the 1920s, then the 1929 stock market crash wiped out what was left.
