NDN Gulfshore Shootout: Naples can't recover from another poor start
After battling back from a big second-half deficit the night before in a tough loss to Ensworth (Tenn.), Naples never got started in its consolation game with Germantown Academy (Pa.).
The Patriots used a 17-0 second-quarter run to build a 36-11 lead, never looking back in a 71-48 victory to drop Naples to 0-2 in the Naples Daily News Gulfshore Shootout. Naples will play Largo Sunday at noon in a third-game guarantee.
“It was a tough way to start the game,” Naples coach Brian Bruce said. “We came out sluggish in back-to-back games. Sometimes, it's hard to predict what you're going to get from teenagers. We had way too many mental breakdowns on defense. They're a well disciplined, physical team but we gave them too many easy ones today.”
Tim McCarty scored 19 points, Mike Doty added 11 and Cameron Ayers 10 for Germantown Academy (6-7). The Patriots rebounded from a 54-50 loss the day before to Bartow.
“I was disappointed with the way we defended (against Bartow) and was much happier with the effort (against Naples),” Patriots coach Jim Fenerty said. “We saw Naples play the night before and we were impressed with them, their coach does a nice job with them. When we defend the way we did today, we feel we can compete with anyone.”
He was particularly pleased with his interior players, namely McCarty and forward Eric Yuschak.
“We controlled the backboards, which was nice to see, especially since Naples had some size down low,” Fenerty said.
Germantown Academy attacked Naples center Cole Gordon early and often, getting the senior into foul trouble and making him a non-factor for most of the game.
The Golden Eagles played a little better in the second half, but it was way too late. Germantown Academy led by as many as 31 points in the fourth quarter, before Naples (5-5) knocked some shots down late to make the score more respectable.
“We'll keep working and we'll get better,” Bruce said. “If we play better fundamental defense, we'll be fine. Today, we didn't do a great job of taking care of the ball. It makes it very difficult to run your offensive sets if you're careless with the basketball.”
