Q: Just a question. We’re snowbirds who will be back in December. It seems to me that the Sanibel Steakhouse in Bonita Springs is gone — am I right? And if so, what went in in its place?
Thanks so much.
Mary Caruso
A: Right you are, Mary, the Sanibel Steakhouse in Bonita Springs is long gone. After it closed, a place called Cozze (which means mussels in Italian) occupied that same site in Colony Plaza on U.S. 41. Unfortunately, Cozze folded as well after a short run.
But fear not — If you’re into Italian cuisine a new independent restaurant called Angelina’s Ristorante is in the works, and its opening is likely to coincide with your December visit.
Owners Ed Wagner and Don Smith have a combined 90 years of experience in the restaurant business. And while we all know Italian restaurants are about as common as out-of-state license plates in this area, Ed and Don are setting Angelina’s apart in a couple of ways. First, the price point is going to be high — think of it as the Ruth’s Chris of Italian fare. But for that price, diners will be treated to authentic dishes from all 20 regions of Italy, prepared by a staff headed up by chef Salvatore Comarato, who has appeared on the Food Network’s “Ready, Set, Cook” and has been interviewed on CNN by contributor and registered dietician Carolyn O’Neil. Locally recognized sommelier Angela Robertson will be in charge of wines. Wait — that last sentence was redundant, wasn’t it?
The interior is being completely redone. The focal point of Angelina’s will be a 21-foot wine tower in the center of the dining room. Two banquet rooms will accommodate special events. Outside, there will be private, air-conditioned cabanas that seat six to eight, which can be rented for the evening.
As for the menu — Ed says don’t bother looking for chicken marsala. It won’t be there. Instead, you’ll see more exotic Italian dishes. Here are a few entrees listed on the draft version of the menu: Ravioli Osso Bucco — jumbo ravioli filled with a classic preparation of braised veal and vegetables in a savory demi glace; Linguine Marechiarro — linguine pasta tossed with a saute of baby clams, julienne prosciutto, fresh roma tomatoes, garlic, crushed red pepper, fresh sweet basil, extra virgin olive oil and clam broth; Sirloin Saltimbocca — New York strip seasoned and grilled, topped with a saute of forest mushrooms, prosciutto, sage, provolone and a marsala demi glace and served with wilted spinach; Swordfish Involtine — sword steak, butterflied and rolled with a citrus herb crumb mix, pan roasted with tomatoes and olives and served with creamy polenta. Other main dishes will feature meats that just don’t tend to find their way onto too many menus, like rabbit and wild boar.
As I mentioned earlier, Ed and Don are shooting for a mid-December debut.
So, Mary, that’s all I know. Hope that answers your question. Buona giornata.

How "nice" for the rich people! Not your everyday Italian restaurant? The prices are going to be high?! Poor old regular Italian restaurants here are not that cheap people. Naples and Bonita are chock full of expensive restaurants that the rich can afford already but now not good enough? Unbelievable! What level of snotty can this area actually reach? Apparently most "common people" think it's already off the scale, but now who nows the sky is the limit! OR IS IT? (PUN INTENDED)

Two down one to go !! I feel this one won't last either. It may be more suited for Fifth Ave. Style. Bonita Springs people are not low class, but the life styles of the rich & famous are nestled more so in NAPLES people!!!!

Great idea, expensive Italian food in Bonita. I suggest making a reservations only policy also, even when the restaurant is empty.

when carrabbas first opened in naples a bowl of a 1/2 lb of spaghetti and 2 meatballs was $8.99,,now its friggin $16.00 for a 1/4 lb and 1 meatball,,,,a 1/4 lb of pasta is .25 cents. I used to frequent the restaurant cause you could get in and out with a glass of wine and a tip for $30.00 but if i'm gonna spend $70.00 (which is about what it is now) on a meal for myself then i might as well sit at the bar at Shulas and enjoy a fat steak rather than fast food italian

I'm going to go there just to tick off the whiney people who want another McDonalds. Even if one couldn't afford it at all... I don't think I would complain. We live in a somewhat free country. Why should people be forced to open a place that caters to poor people? We already have enough fast-food places that you can drive by and watch 15-member families waddle in and out of all day.
If this places looks decent I may try it. If it sucks I won't go back. Simple as that... Have any of you driven by Vincenzo's in Bonita during season? It can be somewhat pricey (wines are obnoxious) and the service absolutely sucks now under the recent ownership. It is run by a bunch of uppity fools that need a good beating but idiots will pile in there and fill the lot out to the street.
P.S. Carrabbas is overpriced and the food is bleh. It is funny watching the clowns line up in cattle formation to get in there during season.

No one wants another McDonalds, or Burger King or Chik Filet! Never mentioned such nonsense! No one forces anybody to open restaurants for poor people! No one mentioned food stamps and welfare either! As for whiney? Make sure you know all the facts and if you can walk on water and turn water into wine then you can call anybody what you want! Until then, remember all are welcome to voice their opinions, everyone has one without lowering ones self to childish name calling. Have a great day Jim!
