Video: Topless women protest sale of fur in front of Waterside Shops

STORY TOOLS

If you drove by the intersection of U.S. 41 and Pine Ridge Road between 1 and 2 p.m. today, you probably saw two scantily clad women parading the street corner with signs protesting fur sales.

Two women working for PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, camped out in front of Waterside Shops in Naples wearing only shoes, panties and head-to-toe body paint to protest Burberry. As the midday sun beat down, their imitation of the trademark Burberry plaid design began to drip down their faces.

“We’re here to get the message across that plaid has gone bad,” said 23 year-old Natasha Smith, of Toronto, Canada. “Burberry is supporting the cruel fur industry, which tortures and kills millions of animals a year.”

Smith and her co-worker, Molly Williams, of New York, have been visiting various cities across the United States in an attempt to bring awareness to consumers and encourage Burberry not to use fur in its clothing line.

“We’re touring Florida this week,” Smith said, smiling at the sound of car horns from passing cars. “We were in Las Vegas and Arizona last week.”

Williams is hopeful Burberry will take fur off of its shelves completely.

“We’re hoping that, you know, once they drop it from their shelves that they’ll set an example and then other people will, as well,” Williams said.

During their protest in Naples, the two women didn’t speak with anyone from Burberry, Williams said.

More power to them. Naples needs more protests of this sort.

If anything this going to attract people to the store to buy fur...morons.

what..no photo journalists NDN? I was driving to Coastland mall from N. Naples and saw one of em' with her sign, but with the body paint I couldn't tell she was topless; body paint wrecks everything...

another protest is needed against fishskin skirts and dresses...

I'm happy to see this kind of protest making its way to Naples. People need to quit turning away from this type of cruelty and TAKE NOTICE. Way to draw attention to it :)

And in case the old ladies that are still purchasing fur items haven't noticed...we live in FLORIDA!

. . . and if you were driving, bicycling or walking down Bayshore last night you would have jumped out of your own skin around 8:45pm when two patrol cars went screaming at break-neck speed down toward Dells. The cars probably went from 30mph to 80mph in the blink of an eye! Sure would like to know what that was all about.

Unless someone was being held at gunpoint, there is absolutely no reason they should have been allowed to travel that fast down that street. It was PUBLIC ENDANGERMENT at its worst!!

#9 Posted by dkg1960 on September 28, 2007 at 4:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why not go to Fort Myers and protest humans killing other humans? They're up to what 2 or 3 murders per week and no slow down in site. But, yes, let's worry about the critters.

PETA ..nothing but hypocrits!!

Here is the link with some truth about the real PETA deal.

http://www.petakillsanimals.com/petas...

"From July 1998 through the end of 2005, PETA killed over 14,400 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals" -- at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters."

Between 1998-2005 Peta recvd over 17,000 animals. They killed 14,419, they adopted out a measely 3,047 animals and transferred 331.

"In 2000, when the Associated Press first noted PETA's Kervorkian-esque tendencies, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk complained that actually taking care of animals costs more than killing them. "We could become a no-kill shelter immediately," she admitted.

PETA kills animals. Because it has other financial priorities."

They are nothing but a bunch of money grabbing hypocrits who figured out how to make BIG money from
people making donations thinking that money is actually going to help animals. Check this page out if you want to see what PETA is REALLY doing!

That is disheartening to think that PETA may be doing that, firefly, but even if that is the case, fur should still be protested against, regardless of what organization is doing supporting it.

I'm sure everyone has their soap box and this is their's, they are not harming anyone (more than likely making a few people smile!) so why not let them protest peacefully and without judgements?

#14 Posted by BetterWay on September 28, 2007 at 5:04 p.m. (Suggest removal)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FIREFLY
i was hopeing someone else in this city knew about the travisties of peta.
they are one of the most unethical animal groups i have ever seen.
they do not care one bit about animals, they care only in there profit margin.
when an organization like peta speaks out about cruelty to animals and then goes and kills animals in the same instant is unethical and a total lack of compassion.
they get rich by donations from people who really do care about the well being of animals, anyone can talk a good talk, and get people to believe they care when in realty there only plan is to just line there own pockets, from very well meaning people

Canada, New York, They're not part of the real world anyway. Ship them all to California and hope it slides off into the ocean. Pigs are raised for RIBS. Cows are raised for BEEF. Some animals are raised for FUR. Get over it and worry about all the fertilizer and pesticides running into our gulf everyday from your beautiful lawns and golf courses.

#20 Posted by Hindsight on September 28, 2007 at 5:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all the feedback, (both positive and negative) on our demonstration. I understand that this is a controversial issue, but whether you agree with our methods or not I hope you will consider our message: Animals are not ours to wear. Animals were not put on this earth to be crammed into filthy cages for months or years at a time, anally electrocuted, and skinned alive.

I'd like to make a quick comment about firefly16's comment. It is no secret that PETA has taken on part of the unfortunate and devastating responsibility of dealing with the massive companion animal overpopulation crisis. Every year in the United States animal shelters across the nation are forced to put to death roughly half of the 6 million to 8 million unwanted dogs and cats who pour into their overwhelmed facilities. Wonderful, healthy, social, loveable animals lose their lives because of simple math: too many animals and not enough homes. Yes, PETA is one of these shelters. Everyone who works for PETA has devoted their life to fighting for animal rights. Can you imagine how devastating it is for these compassionate animal lovers to be the ones to euthanize these poor unwanted animals. Before coming to work for PETA I volunteered in an animal shelter for years. I have witnessed the overpopulation crisis firsthand. Every time a breeder produces another dog, a family has a litter of puppies to show their children the "miracle of birth" or a family brings home a cute little kitten from the pet store an animal in a shelter DIES.

#21 Posted by tashy_22 on September 28, 2007 at 7:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Right now "no-kill" is simply not an option. There are too many careless people producing too many animals. There are "no-kill" shelters but these shelters should really be called "turn-away" shelters. They get too full and turn away people's unwanted pets when they are brought in. What happens then? People shoot them, abandon them, drown them, tie them to a chain in their backyard and neglect them for years. Is death always the worst possible thing? "No-kill" shelters are also notorious for warehousing animals. They pile them sometimes literally up to the ceiling in small cages. These animals become sick, and they go crazy from being confined for too long. Again. Is death always the worst thing?

What is PETA doing? PREVENTION. In 2006 PETA’s SNIP-mobile spayed and neutered 8,298 cats, dogs, and rabbits. Check out PETA's 2006 financial reports (http://www.peta.org/about/numbers.asp) to see all the other great things they have accomplished. Also, check out the website of our newest campaign, the ABC campaign (animal birth control). This campaign is devoted 100% to the companion animal overpopulation crisis!:) To call PETA employees "money grabbing hypocrites is cruel." I urge ANYONE who has ANY issues with PETA to please do a little research before you pass judgment.

#22 Posted by tashy_22 on September 28, 2007 at 7:44 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Anyway, thanks again to all the wonderful people who supported us today. Without your voices we would not be able to create change. And for anyone who wants to help out, one of the simplest most effective things you can do is to go into your local Burberry and inform the manager that you recently learned about Burberry’s involvement with the fur industry and you will not purchase ANYTHING from their store until they pull fur from their shelves.

What the heck?? This is Naples, Florida !!!! Hello??? We're generally in 80+ temperatures for the most part. Who is wearing fur here? Wouldn't they be more effective up north protesting in the cold somewhere? Perhaps the residents up there would be as accepting of their presence as obviously Neapolitans have been!!

#26 Posted by MyNaples on September 28, 2007 at 8:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Trashy 22, I mean tashy, thanks for your input, but I dont believe a hook in the mouth of a fish is cruel and unusual punishment. Before you get on your soap box and tell me your protest/posts didnt refer to that, I concur, HOWEVER, I have read that your "group" has tried to ban fishing, my question to you.........do you eat meat of any means, be that beef or fish? Secondly, if you dont, do you supplement your body, for the lack of it with mineral oils that include oils from animals? Cause baby, you and I both know, you wont survive without it.

Although running naked in public is one of the ways to get attention from people, its surely not the right attention members of a supposedly 'serious' organization should do .

Why does sandnsurf care what she eats? There are other forms of protein/supplements that are not animal based. A little research goes a long way.

That being said, God put man in dominion over the animals, that is the natural order of things.

But He does expect us to not mistreat them in the process....

All those homeless people living in shelters without enough food...

All those ownerless animals living in shelters without enough people to adopt them...

This sounds like a really easy way to solve both problems. Anyone from Korea got a good receipe for Dog Ribs handy?

And how do you make a dead cat float? Two scoups of vanilla ice cream and two scoups of dead cat in a blender till smooth, add root beer. YuMMy!

Instead of wating time posting ignorant ,useless comments, especially about not being able to see pictures, why not just wait it out, pray, and when your time comes, you will be judged as to how you treated all livimg beings, and the planet. Now, go do something beneficial, like picking up cigarette butts and trash. THERE IS A UNIVERSAL JUSTICE, AND THE EYES OF TRUTH ARE WATCHING YOU, WHETHER YOU BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

GOOD FOR YOU TASHY, I BACK YOU 100%.
NEUTER YOUR PETS, VISIT AND DONATE TO SHELTERS, IF YOU WANT A REAL WAKEUP CALL, RENT "FAST FOOD NATION" AND WATCH THE ACTUAL SLAUGHTER HOUSE RITUAL. YOU'LL NEVER EAT MEAT AGAIN, JUST LOOK AT THE ANIMAL'S EYES.
START BEING A LOT MORE SENSITIVE TO OTHER LIFE, WE WERE PUT HERE WITH "DOMINION" OVER OTHER ANIMALS, NOT "DESTRUCTION", AND THAT INCLUDES SENDING OUR MEN TO WAR TO GIVE THEIR PRECIOUS LIVES, AND DEVASTATE THEIR FAMILIES, FOR UNCLEAR REASONS MADE BY A GROUP OF IGNORANTS CALLED OUR GOVERNMENT.

Really, get off your personal vendetta concerning my postings, you have unsuccessfully attempted to degrade my comments in the past. Please, get a real life, and get over the fact that many people are so much more intelligent than you, and sensitive. Life goes on, deal with it the best you can at your low level of knowledge and empathy.
God bless you, please stop wasting you precious life trying to hurt people, because you have no effect on me whatsoever.
Spend quality time making a difference, God bless you, peace. I forgive you for ineffectively trying to ange me, God bless you.
I am going to pick up trash on the beach, hopefully I won't run into you, because I can't lift you!

So what if I wear a coat made out of the pelts of the animals that PETA killed off? Would that be okay? I mean as long as they were killed by PETA it'd be okay right?

You think maybe they could make fur blankets from all the dead animals and pass them out to the poor and unfortunate...that'd be nice. Maybe Burberry could buy the furs from PETA and then sell them in their stores...

I got it! Everyone start domesticating animals that we like our fur coats made from, then we will over populate them, abandon them and then send them to PETA shelters for adoption, then when they have to kill them cuz no one wants them they can sell the furs to Burberry and EVERYONE PROFITS!!!

It'll be great!

Must be a slow news day... since this is the second ADVERTISMENT they gave to these topless ladies. Those are sure some ugly shoes. Are they plastic or leather? Is it okay to kill for the leather to make the shoes?

Is going topless LEGAL in Naples... just wondering why they have not been picked up... like they do to naked ladies on the beach.

actually, there is something called "faux" leather. Ever hear of it? Kinda like pleather.

#58 Posted by FreshFace on September 30, 2007 at 3:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

To the naked protesting ladies:
You lose your credibility when you protest naked because you don't take into account that everyone seeing you is NOT a mature adult. The body paint was very eye-catching and the paint would still have attracted attention with a bikini top on. Some of us religiously conservative people are against animal cruelty too... But you insult all the mamas who are just trying to raise their kids right when you so something so inappropriate. Until you protest with some decency, you'll never get mainstream support. If your argument has a strong point, you don't need to show your t!ts to everyone to prove it. Show some ovaries! Your attempt to get attention was cheap and tacky. If anyone still wants to wear fur these days, in NAPLES of all places... I'll never get it... but I think your protests would be better received back in Toronto where people actually have wear warm coats.
