Another dead panther found in Collier

State biologists recovered the remains of an endangered male Florida panther today from Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park in rural Collier County.

Park rangers found the remains Tuesday evening, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission collected the panther's bones today. The remains will be sent to the Conservation Commission wildlife research lab in Gainesville for further examination.

The exact cause of death is unknown, but field evidence did not indicate an attack by another panther, a vehicle strike or foul play, biolgoist Dave Onorato said.

The panther, known as FP105, did not have a radio collar. It was about five years old and had been dead less than three weeks, Onorato wrote in an e-mail.

FP105 is the sixth documented panther mortality so far this year. The most recent was an adult male panther found earlier this month on private land northwest of Oil Well Road and State Road 29. A necropsy determined the cause of death was pneumonia.

of course it was an off-road vehicle driven by a crazed red-neck! B-freckin'-S.

let the red-necks run free. we pay taxes, not the panthers, cross breeded from other wild cats.

i can't wait for the day when these "environmentalists" are endangered animals. let the taxpayers decide.

Honestly... I do like the animal. But if they didn't exist anymore it wouldn't change my life.

I think we need to push the panther people to do a better count of these things, I think more exist then they are letting on. Its amazing that an animal that has so much information collected on it per year, there is hardly any of this data on the internet or in their yearly report.

Wow! How horrible is it when our society cannot find room for our wildlife? First the cougar, than what do you want to eliminate next from planet earth? Anything that disturbs your own little comfort zone. This is so sad! Animals have a right to live.

Conservationist and wildlife advocate, Rachel Carson observed. "Until we can learn to appreciate the valued life with which we share the earth, we shall not be truly human...."
