Gerry Fleming wants to get to the next level.
So do the Florida Everblades.
For that to have a chance to happen, Fleming and the Everblades, the Estero-based hockey team he has coached for the past seven years, have decided to part ways.
Fans of Southwest Florida’s premier pro sports team wish him — and the Everblades — all the best.
They want to see Fleming’s hard work rewarded — he has more regular-season wins, 320, than any other ECHL coach since 2001 — and they want to see their Everblades win the ECHL championship, a goal that has eluded the team for all of its 10-year history.
The team is accustomed to reaching and advancing in the playoffs — for which Fleming gets some of the credit — but this year was swept in the first round.
Time for a change.
It is apropos of both Fleming and the team that the change is able to take place against a backdrop of good will and class.
