Naples Daily News finalist for 4 Sunshine State Awards

The Naples Daily News is a finalist for four 2008 Sunshine State Awards.

Staff Writer Katy Bishop is a finalist in the serious feature reporting category for her story last March titled “Paying the Price: Is Fifth Avenue South in jeopardy from its own success?”

Columnist Brent Batten is a finalist in the serious column writing category for a series of pieces he wrote last summer on the Collier County School Board's firing and hiring of superintendents.

Editorial Editor Jeff Lytle is a finalist in editorial writing for an opinion piece headlined "We can all be on lookout for those in need of help" that he wrote in November about senior citizens requiring assistance.

Former Bonita editors Todd Pratt and Karie Partington also are finalists for an editorial they jointly wrote in October called "Reforms must be tangible to protect at-risk children."

Each category has three finalists. Winners will be named May 31 at a Society of Professional Journalists' banquet in Fort Lauderdale.

I didn't realize that they had a "Best Republican Party Mouthpiece" category

Doesn't the NDN usually get nominated for like 10-12 of these a year? How'd they end up with only four? Am I the only one who noticed only one is for actual news reporting? Three are for opinion writing! Yeah, we know the NDN has opinions. But they don't seem to ever be backed up by their own reporters doing real reporting. Maybe because there's no real reporters left???

Hey Brett,

I wasn't planning to post here again, but it is laughable to me that you may receive an award about the firing of the superintendent.

Perhaps you can mention the news blackout that accompanied Dr. Dennis Thompson in this town, should you make an acceptance speech.

And, oh yeah - you might also want to mention that my new parody blog about the matter was recently featured on the GRADEBOOK, the education blog at St Pete Times:

PS Brett, as was saying on another thread:

I always think I am finished writing my parody blog, but now I have again added some new sections, below the "Fashion Forecasts" and above the graphic of the school house. Hopefully, THAT's it. Enjoy!
