When Fort Myers Imam Mohamed Al-Darsani heard Pastor Reza Safa talking about Islam on a WRXY Christian Television program last year, he thought the broadcast furthered harmful misconceptions about his religion.

So Al-Darsani asked Paul Lodato, general manager at WRXY, for a meeting.

“I thought the pastor’s programs on Islam awareness were actually spreading disinformation,” said Al-Darsani.

“I explained how I’ve been trying to work with everybody to build bridges, that the programs I saw were wrong. That this is not Islam.”

During that meeting, Lodato suggested the idea of a public debate. The imam and the pastor both agreed and the event will be held at First Assembly of God Church in Fort Myers on Sunday, August 24.

As founder and director of the Islamic Center for Peace in Fort Myers, Al-Darsani regularly reaches out to Christian churches, Jewish temples and other organizations, explaining the tenets of Islam.

He said he has recently organized inter-faith programs at the Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Estero and Temple Beth El in Fort Myers.

“That’s my main interest,” he said. “Islam is extremely misrepresented, and under-represented, in this society. We work to show people the true Islamic views in the world today, Islam as a religion and as a way of life.”

Safa is a native of Iran and former devout Shiite Muslim who converted to Christianity after encountering missionaries in Sweden.

He is founder of World Harvest Ministries and founder and president of TBN Nejat TV, the first satellite Christian network broadcast in Farsi.

Safa’s television show, “Day of Salvation,” can be seen on WRXY on Mondays at 10 p.m. and on Fridays at 6:30 p.m.

“My goal is to win all Muslims to Christ,” said Safa. “I had that hatred and that hardness in my heart and I want to change that in the hearts of other Muslims.”

The theological debate fits that core mission but it will also give Safa a chance to educate American Christians, he said.

“I like to say we’re in a sandbox in America, with our heads buried in the sand,” he said. “We need to realize that Islamic values contradict democratic values.”

Al-Darsani says those are the kind of ideas he wants to confront through dialogue.

“I was interested in holding a discussion or dialogue, but they’ve insisted in calling it a debate,” he said. “The debate will be a chance for me to talk and reach the public and present Islamic views, which is what’s most important.”

Safa participated in a similar debate with Islamic scholar Dr. Jamel Badawi in Tulsa on January 25, said Lodato.

The event drew a larger crowd than expected and organizers had to turn away 3,000 people.

“This will be that kind of historic debate,” said Lodato. “It should be heated, a pretty intense environment. But Pastor Safa tries to walk in love and Mohamed Al-Darsani is also very grateful that he has this opportunity.”

Golly, muslim4lyfe, were you unable to keep your comments civil?

Investigate the love of Jesus and resolve the anger issues that plague so many.

He is the Way, the Truth and the Life and none come to the Father except through Him.

All extremists are psychos! It doesn't matter the religion. Think of all the murders commited in the name of god...bunch of hypocrits!

#6 Posted by MIF on August 10, 2008 at 8:28 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Thanks, silverback. I did some investigation as you suggested and have found that even Jesus at times could get angry. Mark 3:5 tells us, "He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored." In Matthew 21:12 we find, "Then Jesus went into the temple, threw out everyone who was selling and buying in the temple, and overturned the moneychangers' tables and the chairs of those who sold doves." Anger is a trait shared by both men and gods. It is up to each to control that anger within themselves.

MIF - you are right. No matter what religion one clams, there will always be extremists who damage things for all. Look at the KKK - they claim Christianity, yet have terrorized and murdered many in the 'name of God'. They are a group of extremists too. Should we look at the KKK as being an example of true 'Christianity'? And should we look at radical Islam groups as being representative of all Muslims? One thing ALL Religions share is a certain segment that are sick & twisted individuals. NO religion approves of terrorism or murder under God's name, yet you will always find those who have convinced themselves that they ARE God.

Don't get caught up in bringing the Muslim Religion here under any pretense. It really is time America rewrote the documents that served well 100's of years ago but don't work today. Keep a watchful eye on this group!

Getting comfy with Islam? It appears to be not quite the same as some other religions:

Islam is not a religion. It is a radical cult. No islamic "leader" of any note will condemn muslim extremist acts "OUT OF FEAR". Muslims in the U.S. routinely refuse to cooperate with FBI investigations into terrorists. Why? Fear? Or part of a bigger conspiracy?

#13 Posted by DeweyCox on August 10, 2008 at 10:52 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Cousinjed got it right about Islam. its a cult. Christianity as an organised 'faith' is a business. Both have their roots in the Jewish tradition.
ALL are only interested in power & control. ALL are quite prepared to kill for it.

I'd be willing to bet that if any turned up at this so called debate and aired these questions you wuold end up being tasered and sent to jail for disruption.

This debate is just an attempt to con the weak of mind into a warm and fuzzy false sense of security.

If you want to believe then believe, but don't try and force your delusions on anyone else.

As a side issue, just imagine. If all the various flavors of church, mosque, synagog, temple etc had to pay tax. How much of a budget deficit do you think we would have right now in this country?

#14 Posted by Ironage on August 10, 2008 at 11:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)

the evil of the Islamic religion is is has no concept of Separation of Church and State..as soon as Muslims get enough political power it becomes Sharia Law for the nation..this is it's cruel pattern around the world..Iraq is now under Sharia Religious Law as it's "new" constitution was a sham..women are treated worse now than under Sadam..Christians and Jews have been driven out...instead of having a reformation life Christianity and Judaism did..Islam has been taken over by Fundamentalists..American Islam cannot be compared to Islam around the world since we still have a strong wall of separatio of church and state...

All the Abrahamic religions have their roots in the twisted psychological story of a man who hears of voice telling him to kill and burn his son as a sacrifice..and that's why all these religions still have very twisted element in them today..all have a cultish nature but on a tax free basis..the easiest way to con any human is to get them to abandon their "bonds" of reason and become a believer...

he's damm correct!!!...and women's rights, and singular marriage, and all secular law

I'm a secularist/freethinker..but when it comes to Islam I side politically with the Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus etc. cause there is no secular law in Islam, only Sharia religious law once the get a foothold in society...

dude can anybody explain to me how 3=1 and 1=3.there is one god and islam in the only religion that seems to make sense. they believe in 1 god and their last prophet. and if Jesus was your savior and god and you guys seems to worship and praise him "evey sunday". then why did Jesus worship his own father. and you guys making it seem like its some type of joke, god had a son.have a lil respect . god is all knowing and all powerful..if he created adam without a father and mother. then im sure he didnt need a wife to create jesus. christain religon is confusing and the ones who arnt ignorant enough who acutally go white explore what islam is ae the ones who convert in america.. from black to whites.fastest growing religon. and yes muslims do convert to christianity beacuse why???they are bribed with money and etc..so sombody plz try to make sense of me of how the chritain faith is based on

You'd better pray to whatever God you believe in that the Muslim Religion never gets a strong foothold in OUR country. It will be the end of America as we know it. Politicians should be protecting this country not opening doors and allowing things to fester. Bad, Bad, Bad move. This debate should not even be allowed to take place nor should it have been given any mention in the NDN to help its cause.

muslim4lyfe, how about you explain to me how the idea of any sort of 'god' is anything more than a mental illness that only seems to afflict mankind. Its the curse of sentient beings perhaps? The downside of intelligence maybe? The trade off from being self aware?

Its like being in the 'Matrix' wake from religeon and revel in being alive.

I do like Cape's comment and fear that without strict rules in this country about others views we are blasteded. You may have your opinion but opinions never solve problems, hard stances on positions do. This is AMERICA, lest we forget!

#20 prometheus;
you aparently have some bibial knowkedge. In your statement you refered to Abraham being told to go and sacifrice his son Isaac.

I am not sure what your point was other that you were trying to disgard religious beliefs as nothing more than a fairy tale.

If that indeed is what your point is than you have rejected salvation through Jesus the son and God the father has offered???

I guess I am a Christian. But I am really not sure. I mean I know that there is a God and Jesus Christ is his Son.

But when it comes to the Bible, what ever version you read, I have to ask myself how much of it is actually what God or Jesus said and how much is what someone else said they said.

Take the King James version of the Bible today. How long was it before it the original Bible was put into writing after the people in spoke, performed, or witnessed certain events?

How many times has it been translated into different languages before the current "English" version?

How many times was an ambigious translation "leaned" a certain way due to political pressures secular and/ or religious?

# 47 Neal;

just remember Judaism and Christianity is Faith based. We as individuals either choose to either believe or not that God has preserved the written word in scriptures of the Bible. I myself prefer the King James translation along with a good concordance to study.

If you have concerns try praying asking God to give you that messure of Faith to believe so you can find confort in his (GODS) ability to presurve his word.

#33 Posted by 676 on August 11, 2008 at 1:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

chincieone #49...No, Judaism and Christianity are not Faith based. At least not according to most who follow those religions. They are immutable laws of the universe to those who follow it.

Saying they are Faith based would mean that if, and only if, you believe then you are affected by it. And that completely negates what is taught in ALL religions. By presenting it as Faith based a person is trying to slip it in on you on the sly. And that is dishonest and hypocritical of any religion who purports to preach the truth.

As far as prayer goes...if you use prayer to ask for something isn't that tatamount to saying "Give me this or I don't believe in You."?

#34 Posted by Neal on August 11, 2008 at 2:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Let's make this real simple. We will use Moses as a Jewish prophet, Jesus as a Christain prophet and Mohammed as a Muslim prophet.
We are told to emulate the qualities of the prophets of our faith because they are representaive of all we believe in and hold dear.
Of the three examples I have listed, which one is a warrior-prophet who has personally killed non-believers?Regardless of what has been done in the name of Judaism, Christainity and Islam by it's followers, Islam is the only one of the three that includes killing non-believer's, i.e. kafirs as a way to emulate the prophet, Mohammed and attain salvation.

#35 Posted by rtag63 on August 11, 2008 at 2:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)

#52 rtag63...

Nope ya gotta include Moses in on that also. After all Moses waited to lead his people through the Red Sea so the Egyptians would be caught there when the waters closed. He led the Egytians into an ambush if you will.

And while Jesus may not have killed anyone he did run all of the moneylenders out of the temples. As it states he ran (drove) them out it would seem to indicate some violence involved as they did not just leave of their own free will.

Using violence to attain your political gains, secular or religious, is still war no matter how you slice it.

So while Mohammed may have been the most violent he was not the ONLY violent prophet of the three religions.

#36 Posted by Neal on August 11, 2008 at 3:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

it is a big stretch to equate Jesus chasing the money changers from the temple and Moses leading his people out of Egypt with the parting of the Red sea away from their persecutors as acts of violence

Speaking of Moses, let's look into Numbers 31: 7-18 which goes like this, "They attacked Midian just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed all the men. All five of the Midianite kings – Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba – died in the battle. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. Then the Israelite army captured the Midianite women and children and seized their cattle and flocks and all their wealth as plunder. They burned all the towns and villages where the Midianites had lived. After they had gathered the plunder and captives, both people and animals, they brought them all to Moses and Eleazar the priest, and to the whole community of Israel, which was camped on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.
Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the people went to meet them outside the camp. But Moses was furious with all the military commanders who had returned from the battle. "Why have you let all the women live?" he demanded. "These are the very ones who followed Balaam's advice and caused the people of Israel to rebel against the LORD at Mount Peor. They are the ones who caused the plague to strike the LORD's people. Now kill all the boys and all the women who have slept with a man. Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves." So in this it tells us that to go against the god of Moses it will mean death. Now where have I heard this before?

Yes, I meant what I said. I've read a lot of entry's since my last post and feel the necessity to let you know that many of you are coming at this from way out in left field.

There is no way to get salvation in the Muslim faith. It is all based on works and an individual is never really sure if they make it until after they die. After they die they still don't make it because they have worshiped the wrong god.

Real Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship with the Son figure of the living God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is a relationship that God wanted with the Jews but he blinded them so they would reject Jesus and that is how we Gentiles were invited in.

God created two kinds of people, Jews and Gentiles. 50 days after Jesus was crucified (Pentecost) the third group was created. The Church (people) made up of enlightened Jews and enlightened Gentiles.

Yes,many people have been killed in the name of God. Other than those mentioned in the Bible, the others were misguided. The Crusades were wrong and carried out by misguided soldiers. 1000% + more people have been killed for secular reasons. Add the casualty's on both sides of WW1, WW2, Korea, Viet Nam, Cambodia etc. etc.

There is so much I would love to tell you, but time does not permit and many of you aren't ready.

Read the Bible with any open mind. Make that a reference Bible and it will come clear for many of you.

Go to the debate on the 24th.

True Christianity died out soon after Jesus died. Our churches don't teach the teachings of Jesus. All religions, including apostate Christianity, are false and doesn't make sense. I believe in secular humanism to solve our problems. We should use our brains instead of believing what people did hundreds and thousands of years ago. All religions are responsible for wars and people hating each other. Religions cause most of the world's problems. There are very few true Christians these days.
