Local golf: Lamely has big payday up in Iowa

Derek Lamely’s annual summer trip to Iowa paid off handsomely for the former Florida Gulf Coast University star last month.

Lamely, 28, became the first to win the Waterloo and Cedar Rapids Opens. He won in Waterloo by two shots and took home $40,000.

“I played good, and I kind of did what I wanted and didn’t have to stress it coming in,’’ Lamely said.

Then in Cedar Rapids, he waited out multiple weather delays and survived a five-hole playoff to win $12,500.

“That was fun, too,’’ he said.

However, Lamely paid a bit of a price. He was scheduled to play in a Monday qualifier for a Nationwide Tour event in Omaha, Neb., the next day.

Lamely ran into a couple of storms while he was driving, and eventually pulled off and went to sleep at 2 a.m. He got back on the road four hours later, stopped and ate breakfast, then made his tee time. He didn’t qualify.

“I was a little behind the 8-ball before I even teed off,’’ he said.

Lamely will return to the NGA/Hooters Tour this week, take next week off, and come back and play the following three weeks.

Lamely has played on four events on the mini-tour, and is 32nd on the money list.

He’ll then gear up for another shot at PGA Tour Qualifying School in October.
