As usual, Belmont's men and women were picked as cross country favorites by Atlantic Sun Conference coaches in the 2008 preseason poll released Wednesday.

Florida Gulf Coast University's men, who finished eighth in their first Division I campaign under then-coach Chris Highfield last season, were, along with Mercer, picked to finish seventh. FGCU's women, who finished seventh last season, are ranked ninth among the 11 A-Sun programs.

Two-time defending A-Sun champ Kipkosgei Magut, a senior, looks to lead Belmont to its seventh straight conference title. Belmont's women must replace three of their top five in the Bruins' quest to repeat as conference champs.

First-year coach Cassandra Goodson's FGCU men and women open the season at the Miami Greentree Invitational at 6 p.m. on Sept. 5.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
