A kitchen fire reuslting from a candle caused thousands of dollars in damage to a Lehigh Acres home shortly before noon Thursday.
Lehigh Acres firefighters, responding to smoke coming from 111 McKinley Heights in Lehigh after a neighbor reported the fire, quickly extinguished the blaze, said Patrick Comer, public information officer for the Lehigh Acres Fire and Rescue.
The fire was contained to the kitchen but it caused an estimated $20,000 in damage to the home. Fire Marshal Ken Bennet says the fire started as a result of an unattended candle that ignited some nearby combustibles, Comer said.
No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. At the family’s request, the American Red Cross was notified as the home is uninhabitable, Comer said.
