Local tennis: Pelican Marsh hosting a couple of big events

Two events that will crown tennis royalty are coming up at Pelican Marsh.

This Saturday there will be a “King of the Court” event for 3.5-level men. It could spotlight as many as 16 teams competing for prizes in a unique two-hour format. The cost is $10 per person and the event will begin at 9:30 am.

A “Queen of the Court” event for 3.5 women is slated for Sept. 6, also at 9:30 a.m. It will have the same format and prizes.

Pete Minarich of Pelican Marsh says the two-hour format allows for a competitive tournament experience without players having to set aside an entire weekend.

Both events are limited to 16 teams and teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Pelican Marsh residents have first priority in sign-ups.

Beverages will be provided throughout the competition and all players must sign up in advance by calling 514-3200. Minarich emphasizes that all players must have a 3.5 USTA rating.

Van Fleet and Neill lead the Series standings with six Grand Prix points apiece. Tied with five points apiece in third place are Nicky Iandimarino, Coffey, Barr, Vukajlovic, Trevor Conte, Laura Morgan and Zachary Schiller.

The next event in the Series is a singles tournament, to be played at the East Naples Community Park on Saturday, Sept. 20. These tournaments are designed to help novices at tournament competition learn tennis procedures and sportsmanship and to help parents learn the nuances of tennis spectatorship.

The registration deadline for the Sept. 20 tournament is Thursday, Sept. 18. Contact Collier County Parks tennis pro Spike Gonzales at 248-0894.
