More than 300 runners and walkers splashed their way through the fields at Estero High School on Saturday morning.
Sloppy conditions left in the wake of Tropical Storm Fay caused times to be slower than usual at the Fast Cat 5K, an annual fund raiser for the Estero High cross country program that is hosted by the Wildcats and the Estero 3D Run Shoppe Road Runners Club.
“It was a great run. It was very successful for our program. We really appreciate the community support,” said Wildcats boys cross country coach and athletic director Jeff Sommer, who noted that about $5,000 was generated.
Erick Montoya, a junior standout on Sommer’s Wildcats team, was the overall winner with a time of 17:13. Ida Baker High’s Darlene Hanlon, 15, captured the female division in 20:45.
“It was a slow course with a lot of slop. It’s not something you want to do everyday,” said Sommer.
The field included 50 runners from Citrus Salon.

For the second year in a row, Estero High will be the host school for the Class 2A and 3A regional cross country championships. The races will be held Friday, Nov. 14 at Estero Community Park.
Estero boys cross country coach and athletic director Jeff Sommer said last year’s races went smoothly. When no other schools offered to host the races this year, Sommer was glad to do it again.
“It helps out Lee and Collier counties in terms of gas. We could have ended up on the other coast. This way we get to sleep in our own beds,” said Sommer.
Sommer said putting on the races wouldn’t be possible without help from a strong crew of volunteers.
“I have unbelievable parent support,” he said.
Estero will also be the host school for the Class 2A swimming championships, which will be held Nov. 18 at the FGCU/Lee County Aquatic Center.
Tune-ups for the 2008 high school football season will dot the weekend sports slate.
On Friday, new coach Rich Dombroski will lead Estero into Lehigh Acres to face East Lee County while South Fort Myers travels to Naples to square off against Barron Collier. Game time for both pre-season games is 7:30 p.m.
Action begins for real on Sept. 5 when Estero hosts South Fort Myers.
