Editorial: Looking to save money — without endangering lives

Good news. The idea of merging or consolidating at least some of Collier County’s independent fire districts is still alive. Fire chiefs are scheduled to get a briefing on the status of plans this week.

Now more than ever, government agencies ought to be troubleshooting every opportunity possible for efficiency, which includes maintaining quality services.

We traditionally have believed that cutting administrative duplication, with or without adding ambulance service control, is the way to go for countywide or even regional fire protection.

As with any fundamental service or utility, we believe customers care most about the availability of good service at a fair price when it’s needed.

Who provides it comes in a distant second.

We are eager to hear more on this important fire service consolidation matter. We will be looking for substance. We stand ready to lead the cheering when we see it.
