Coming soon: Scheduled September releases in theaters and on DVD

September is usually kind of a tweener month for movies. One foot is still in the summer blockbuster season and another is inching toward the fall Oscar sweepstakes. This year is no different.

But it’s also a good time to go to the movies because so many genres are represented. Rom-coms, action flicks, black comedies, Oscar hopefuls and Tyler Perry are all on the schedule.

Big names abound. Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Uma Thurman, Nicolas Cage, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro. Well, you get the picture.

So while there might not be a lot of buzz surrounding September’s movie line-up, there’s still a reason for everyone to go to the mega-plex.

Sept. 5

“THE ACCIDENTAL HUSBAND,” starring Uma Thurman, Colin Firth, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, directed by Griffin Dunne. Romantic comedy. Tagline: “Falling in love ... even the expert is confused.” The skinny: After playing a love interest who dies on “Grey’s Anatomy” and the dead husband on “Weeds,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan finally plays a guy who lives. And in this case, he wreaks havoc on Uma Thurman’s life — in a funny way. Rated PG-13 for some sexual content and brief strong language.

“BANGKOK DANGEROUS,” starring Nicolas Cage. Action crime. Tagline: “There’s only one way out.” The skinny: Nic Cage and his hairline play a hitman in Bangkok for business. So, of course, he falls in love with a local woman and bonds with his errand boy. Sounds kind of like the opening scene of “Temple of Doom.” Rated R for violence, language and some sexuality.

On DVD: “Outsourced”

Sept. 12

“RIGHTEOUS KILL,” starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, 50 Cent, directed by Jon Avnet. Crime thriller. Tagline: “Most people respect the badge. Everybody respects the gun.” The skinny: Two veteran NYC detectives (who else but De Niro and Pacino) work a case that looks a lot like one they put down years ago. Did they make a mistake the first time around? Is it a mistake to cast 50 Cent in anything? Find out. Rated R for violence, pervasive language, some sexuality and brief drug use.

“TYLER PERRY’S THE FAMILY THAT PREYS,” starring Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, Tyler Perry, who also wrote and directed. Comedy. Tagline: “Follow your heart. But watch your back.” The skinny: Tyler Perry is back. Again. But this time he’s not Madea. Perry settles in for bit part and lets Bates and Woodard do the heavy lifting as best friends and matriarchs of two collapsing families. Rated PG-13 for thematic material, sexual references and brief violence.

“THE WOMEN,” starring Candice Bergen, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, directed by Diane English. Comedy. Tagline: “It’s all about ...” Meg Ryan, Annette Bening and Eva Mendes take over for Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell and Joan Crawford in this remake of Clare Booth Luce 1939 comedy. Rated PG-13 for sex-related material, language, some drug use and brief smoking.

“BURN AFTER READING,” starring Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, George Clooney, directed by Joel and Ethan Cohen. Comedy. Tagline: “Intelligence is relative.” The skinny: After cleaning house at the Oscars with the bleak “No Country for Old Men,” the Cohens take a walk on the lighter side in this comedy about two gym employees who try to sell the memoirs of a CIA agent. Rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content and violence.

On DVD: “Baby Mama,” “The Forbidden Kingdom”

Sept. 19

“IGOR,” starring voices of John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, Eddie Izzard. Animation. Tagline: “All men aren’t created Evil.” The skinny: Tired of taking orders, Igor (Cusack) sets out to win the annual Evil Science Fair with his own wicked creation. Rated PG for some thematic elements, scary images, action and mild language.

“LAKEVIEW TERRACE,” starring Samuel L. Jackson, directed by Neil LaBute. Drama thriller. The skinny: You think you’d feel safe with a cop living next door. But if he doesn’t like you, then watch out. Jackson is going to make life hell for Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington. Rated PG-13 for intense thematic material, violence, sexuality, language and some drug references.

“MY BEST FRIEND’S GIRL,” starring Kate Hudson, Dane Cook, Alec Baldwin. Romantic comedy. The skinny: It seems Matthew McConaughey can’t make rom-com’s fast enough to keep up with Kate Hudson. So she heads out on this adventure with Cook and Jason Biggs. Expect similar results. Rated R for strong language and sexual content throughout, including graphic dialogue and some nudity.

“GHOST TOWN,” starring Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, Téa Leoni, directed by David Koepp. Comedy. Tagline: “He sees dead people... and they annoy him.” The skinny: Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. A man dies and then is revived during surgery and then he can see the dead. In this case, one dead guy (Kinnear) wants Gervais to help him stop his widow from remarrying. Rated PG-13 for some strong language, sexual humor and drug references.

On DVD: “88 Minutes,” “Before the Rains,” “Speed Racer,” “Young@Heart”

Sept. 26

“EAGLE EYE,” starring Shia LaBeouf, Billy Bob Thornton, directed by D.J. Caruso. Thriller. Tagline: “If you want to live you will obey.” The skinny: After the success of “Disturbia,” LaBeouf and Caruso reunite to make an action thriller about two unwitting pawns (LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan) in the middle of a political assasination attempt. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action and violence, and for language.

“MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA,” starring John Turturro, John Leguizamo, directed by Spike Lee, novel and screenplay by James McBride. War drama. The skinny: A murder sets in motion an investigation that leads back to a black WWII battalion being trapped in a Tuscan village during the war. Rated R for strong war violence, language and some sexual content/nudity.

“NIGHTS IN RODANTHE,” starring Diane Lane, Richard Gere. Romance. No tag. The skinny: In kind of a reversal from “Unfaithful,” Gere plays a doctor who sparks a romance with an unhappily married woman at a North Carolina inn. Rated PG-13 for some sensuality.

On DVD: “Deception,” “Leatherheads,” “Run Fat Boy Run,” “Sex and the City”
