Local tennis: Tropical Junior Series at Cambier Park next week

Tropical storms may come and go. But now Cambier Park’s Kevin Walker says it’s time for some “tropical” tennis in downtown Naples.

The Arthur Allen Tennis Center at Cambier Park will be the site of the Tropical Junior Super Series tournament on Sept. 6-8.

This USTA-sanctioned event will have boys and girls from all over the state competing in singles and doubles in 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s. The entry fee is $39 per person (fee includes doubles). The entry deadline is Monday.

Entrants may sign up online at usatennisflorida.com. For more details, call 213-3060.

A rainout has forced the rescheduling of the “King of the Court” event for 3.5-level men. To be played at Pelican Marsh, the men’s event now will take place on Sept. 6, the same day as the “Queen of the Court” event. Both will have the same format and could spotlight as many as 16 teams competing for prizes in a unique two-hour format. The cost is $10 per person and the events will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Players must sign up in advance by calling 514-3200 and must have a 3.5 USTA rating.

A new YMCA junior league team tennis format gives players an opportunity to compete in a fun, relaxed atmosphere every weekend. Players will be matched according to skill level and play a mixture of singles, doubles and mixed doubles. It is an opportunity to practice match play against a variety of opponents each week. The philosophy of the program stresses sportsmanship and teamwork in a competitive but fun atmosphere.

Players will be divided into age groups of under 12,14 and 18 and must be able to serve, maintain a rally and know how to keep score.

Registrations are now being accepted at the YMCA pro shop in Naples at 597-8431. Late registrations will be prorated for the session.

The kickoff date is Saturday, Sept. 20 and the program will continue Sept. 27, Oct. 4, Oct. 11, Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 15, and Nov. 22. All matches will be played from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The cost is $79 for eight weeks, which includes court fees, T-shirt, tennis balls, sign-up on the USTA Tennislink site, awards and end-of-season party. All participants must have a junior USTA membership, which is $18 annually.
