Sometimes it happens unprovoked, unsolicited. From the sparks of an unwarranted compulsion — art happens.
Creations vary greatly and can be found in some of the most unexpected places. Under an overpass, by the side of the road in a ditch or on an old abandoned car where the shades created from the color of time masterfully blend with a once-polished shade of green.
Art is in the public for mass consumption. A plentiful cup that runneth over and onto our streets, our walls, our buildings.
There are chance meetings with art that most walk past without notice, and there are the times when we do.
While walking along the shoreline in Delnor-Wiggins State Park, Naples residents John and Jessica Davis come upon what appears to be just a stump deeply rooted in the sand.
Upon closer inspection, they discover it is much more than a stump. It is art — an expressive thought made with a variety of shells that dangle from the gnarly branches of rotting wood.
“We’ve seen this type of expression in the Dutch Antilles on the island of Bonaire. We saw a lot of found objects made into different designs, and we really like the creativity.”
After admiring the work of an unknown artist, John Davis adds a shell to one of the branches and walks away.
“It was a temporary environmentally friendly sculpture, and I wanted to add something” Davis says.
There are other encounters by lone beach walkers and couples who scurry by without a glance, just part of the life of an artform untouted by the critics.
As the wind picks up with the grey sky as its gallery wall, the sculpture made from dying wood and broken shells remains steadfast, endearing itself to the masses even though its audience has now become a flock of gulls.
A vision worthy of an ekphrastic poem.

Nice find Judy. In a time when so many people look for art that matches the sofa it is nice to see that there are others out there who are creating and finding art in the most wonderful locations.

Check out Andy Goldsworthy for some really cool environmental art.
He creates art in nature and photographs it.
Definitely NOT condo art !
