Fishing: Naples' Collins defends IGFA Inshore Championship

Naples resident Robert Collins defended his grand champion title Wednesday at the International Game Fish Association Inshore World Championship in Islamorada.

Collins, who also has a residence in Islamorada, surpassed Day 2 leader Joe Lopez of Coral Gables in the final round of the three-day, catch-and-release tournament dubbed the “Super Bowl of inshore fishing.”

Collins finished with 1,250 points on his 13 fish caught in Florida Bay. He used bait and artificials, along with circle hooks for additional points. Lopez was second with 950 points.

Collins — the 2005 champion of the event, which targets snook, tarpon, permit, bonefish and redfish — also recently won the IGFA Offshore World Championship in Mexico.

“Two world championships within two months, I’m speechless,” Collins said in a release.

In other tournament notes Naples' Troy Pruitt ended the tournament with 1,025 points, scoring a slam while winning second in the bait division. Pruitt, guided Wednesday by Capt. Rusty Albury of Islamorada, released one bonefish, one snook and two redfish adding to his previous duo releases of tarpon and permit.

Former University of Miami and NFL lineman Mark Cooper of Aurora, Colo., captured the fly division championship with 775 points.

The tournament featured 32 anglers who won one of 55 IGFA tournaments held in eight countries in 2007.

Way to go Robert and Troy! Congrats to both of you. Keep Naples on the map of outstanding anglers.
