Guest commentary: Facts about ATVs

I read the letter Larry Baytos sent stating four reasons why all-terrain vehicles should not be used in Collier County.

I would like to take his four reasons and show you the facts.

He first stated that ATVs create noise, air pollution and waste gasoline. The fact is that a big-engine ATV gets over 40 miles per gallon. Air pollution is minimal. Engines go through federal emissions standards since all ATV engines are made overseas. Cars put off more pollutants than ATVs do.

Lawn mowers put off the most air pollutants. You’re not trying to stop people from cutting your lawn, are you? You’re worried about noise. The proposed park is miles away from Naples. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

Baytos also stated ATV riding is a dangerous sport. All sports are dangerous to an extent. Golf can even be dangerous. You can find danger in anything. A pen could be considered dangerous.

You’re worried about Lee County residents riding in Collier County? If anything, they would bring more money. They would buy our gas and get drinks from the gas station. Maybe stop and have lunch.

Also, Baytos says Collier County should not have to buy an expensive all-terrain vehicle to patrol? The county already has ATVs! The Collier County Sheriff’s Office already has at least three top-dollar ATVs. The officers keep them in the back of their CCSO pickups.

Golf? Are you serious? I can think of better things to do than chase a little white ball around all day, and wear goofy pants.

I do understand the county is having financial struggles. But a park was promised over five years ago. I showed your letter to some fellow ATV riders and we all laughed at how misinformed you are. Next time, do your research.

People like you who have moved to Naples have ruined our town’s Southern charm.

Hmmm.... Not sure what you're talking about. Seems most of your figures are just made up.
1)There are no emissions standards for ATV engines,
2)2 stroke engines (found on some ATVs) spew up to 300 times more hydrocarbons than an auto engine, and pollute much more by dumping 25% of their fuel in to the air and water (in the case of marine engines).
Finally - I don't know what kind of ju-ju you're practicing, but my Honda fourtrax gets less than 20 miles per gallon - 300 cc. Most utility ATV models are in about the 20 MPG range - less than my Ford pickup.
Maybe you should try looking up some facts and measuring your own MPG before writing more. An UNINFORMED pen is the most dangerous...
