The Fort Myers Miracle rallied for three runs in the ninth inning Thursday, but it wasn’t enough, as the host Clearwater Threshers won 4-3 in Florida State League play.
Steven Singleton and Wilson Ramos brought in the first two Fort Myers runs with RBI doubles to chase Clearwater starter Darren Byrd with one out in the ninth. Garrett Olson made it 4-3 with an RBI single, but never made it past first base as Eli Tintor struck out and Danny Santiesteban grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
The Miracle were without Juan Portes and Jose Lugo on Thursday, as they began serving three-game suspensions.
Portes, Lugo, Edward Ovalle and Daniel Berg were ejected from Wednesday night’s game against the St. Lucie Mets at Hammond Stadium. The benches cleared in the bottom of the ninth when Portes was hit by a pitch. Four St. Lucie players were also ejected.
Berg and Ovalle will begin serving their suspensions Sunday at Dunedin.
The four Miracle players were also fined an undisclosed amount.
The Miracle and Threshers meet again at 7 p.m. Friday night in the second of their three-game series.
