Would-be jewelry thieves apparently spooked away

Two weeks after Lee County Sheriff’s deputies foiled an attempted burglary at Congress Jewelers, thieves unsuccessfully targeted another Bonita Springs jeweler on Thursday.

In a detailed entrance that involved climbing the roof of a shopping center, descending into a vacant shop and cutting holes through several walls, the burglars reached the vault room of Diamond District, at 26251 South Tamiami Trail, before inexplicably giving up and leaving the scene of the crime. The break-in was only noticed after the suspects had left.

“Something, we think, spooked them,” said store owner Todd Schusterman.

The would-be thieves cut through the drywall of the vacant shop space to get inside Antonacci Design Group. From there, they cut three holes into the wall separating Design Group and Diamond District. Two holes were above ceiling level, and may have been used to peer into the diamond store showroom and vault room.

The other was at floor level and led into the vault room. That hole was only partially cut, and a steel brace ran through the middle.

The thieves never entered the diamond store. They also didn’t take anything from Antonacci Design Group.

“It was clear they were after the diamonds,” said Design Group owner Steve Antonacci. He guessed the thieves might have left the scene by using a back door in his store.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the attempted burglary.
