— Education, health care and small business advocates are joining a Florida lawmaker in his effort to defeat a proposed constitutional amendment.

Amendment 5 would reduce property tax bills about 25 percent by abolishing a portion that goes exclusively to schools. The Legislature, though, would be required to replace that money from other sources.

Opponents of the amendment gathered for a news conference Monday. The group included Florida School Boards Association executive director Wayne Blanton, who said the tax swap could force school districts to lay off thousands of employees.

Sen. Mike Haridopolos, R-Melbourne, said he wasn't sure what strategy his group would take to stop the ballot initiative, which needs 60 percent approval to pass in November.

Those who oppose this admendment say reducing property taxes by 25% and removing the "immoral link" between schools and home ownership will increase taxes. Talk about a bunch of lying lovely human beings you guys take the cake. Financing schools by making the American Dream a Lie never should have been allowed in the first place.

With the primary purpose of an education being to make the American Dream more accessible, yet you see no hypocrisy in prohibiting the American Dream to finance it. Talk about a bunch of bureaucratic bigots you people who oppose this amendment, especially Mike Haridopolos, whom I quote, who said earlier in reference to elimination of property tax and replacing it with a sales tax,” Its an intriguing idea, you would truly own your own home. You wouldn't jeopardize losing your home because of taxes." Shame on you Mike, you should be impeached and banned from politics for the rest of your life. And by the way Mike, since when does the constitution say you don’t have the right to truly own your own home in the first place?

Taxtheair - What you don't realize is that the increased sales tax will only account for about half of the needed funds...and that's only the suggestion. No one knows where the funds come from.

The other part will be to get rid of tax exemptions. Good, let the businesses pay their share...right?

unfortunatly, the tax on businesses will get passed to you. How does this affect you? Do you get your hair cut? Taxed. Dry cleaning? Taxed.

Ever go out to dinner at Outback, BK or do you go to office depot? All local businesses that engage in advertising, lawyers, accountants will be taxed at 7 percent. Do they eat that additional cost? Not a chance. this get's past onto you. The chances are that you will actually pay more in taxes is very high.

This amendment will cost jobs and businesses will pack up and leave. That will be great for our economy.

While Florida rates in the top 5 for business, we will plummet because of these taxes. This amendment will hurt every business, large and small in Florida...except realtors.

I agree that taxes are high. So is insurance. But to damage our economy with this amendment is dangerous. We need to find a better way rather than agreeing to vote on cutting our homeowners taxes...and telling the voters that somehow, someway, the state will figure it out.

it needs to be figured out in a way that helps everyone, before it gets on the ballot.

Yes I agree with you mandersen. I think before we vote on this we need to see where the money for the schools will come from. So far I have seen little the State Government has come up with that sounds like a Good Idea.

At one time that was what the lottery was for I thought. I guess they could not do that after all.

Even raising sales tax 6 cents on a dollar to 7 cents is not that big of a jump. But everyone would carry the burden and not just people who ownes property.

I think they need to hold off untill we have a better plan in place to come up with the short fall of money for education.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
