It’s the little things that can drive your crazy or give you a heart attack on the road. You’re cruising along toward the boat ramp and suddenly you hear that all too familiar sound of a flat tire. With all the construction that was being done here, lots of hazards are bouncing along the roadside. If the flat is on your vehicle, it’s generally not that big of a problem — unless drive your through water, especially saltwater.

Removing lug nuts is never fun, especially if your friendly local mechanic ground them on with an air tool. Breaking down the lug nuts can be a chore; knuckle buster, or worse yet, lead to heat stroke. Often the typical lug wrench is wholly inadequate for the job. Carrying a short length of pipe or large pipe wrench to extend the lever can be a life saver.

Boat trailers are particularly prone to have lug nuts that are frozen on by corrosion. The first step is to wash the wheels vigorously and scrub the lug nuts with a wire brush or rough toilet brush. This will help remove any salt residue. The second step to easy of wheel removal is to keep the lugs and lug nuts well lubricated. Simply apply a generous amount of penetrating oil periodically after washing down.

Finally, the best option is to loosen or remove the lug nuts one at a time and apply a never-cease type nonferrous metal and grease lubricant to the lugs. This will create a barrier between the lugs and lug nuts that is highly corrosion resistant.

Just an aside, I purchased a half-inch,10 amp electric impact wrench that makes the work cheap, easy and efficient.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
