May has been declared History Month in Naples.

For seven years Art Ullmann of Naples has performed a public service by helping tell Naples’ story in vintage photos. He loans items from his priceless collection — gleaned from negatives left behind by a blueprint/surveying business that he bought years ago — on a regular basis to the Daily News.

We have him to thank for the popular “Looking Back” feature in this section on Sundays.

Now, for History Month, highlights of Ullmann’s collection are on special display daily except Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. at a storefront at The Plaza Off Third Street in downtown Naples.

Called “Naples Then — Naples Now,” the exhibit matches black-and-white photos from 1940 through 1970 with new color photos (courtesy of London Aerial Photography) of how the same areas look today.

The show is underwritten by Welsh Companies Florida Inc.

For more information on History Month, go online to www.naplesbackyardhistory.org.

Imagine this as you savor the historic scenes on this page: If not for Ullmann, all of them would have been thrown in the trash. Gone forever.

Enjoy these — and the others in his History Month show.
