Private investigator Victor Ortino, one of three candidates for Collier County sheriff, was the first sheriff’s candidate to meet qualification requirements with the Collier County Supervisor of Elections.

Ortino qualified by submitting a petition with the required 1,862 signatures, which ensures his name will be on the August 26, primary ballot.

Candidates can also qualify by paying a $8,407.08 fee as a partisan candidate running as a Republican or a Democrat, or a $5,604.72 fee as a non-partisan candidate with no party affiliation. Candidates have until noon on June 20, to meet qualification requirements.

Ortino is running against Kevin Rambosk, an executive officer with the Sheriff’s Office, and Vinny Angiolillo, the owner of Class Act Limousine in North Naples. All three candidates are Republicans.

Won or lose, you have my vote!

Congrats Ortino way to go! By the way rahefalu, I alone know dozens of voters who did not sign the petition but will vote for Ortino. When you wake up on Aug. 27 I think you'll see that Ortino will have received more votes than Kevin. If Collier County knows whats good for them they will all vote for Ortino!

Woo Hoo! Congratulations to Victor Ortino -- our next Sheriff!!! We can't wait! Finally, an honest, humble and fearless man to come in anc clean up all the corruption at the CCSO.

Don't kid yourself.
We will be in a world of problems if that happens.

I don't know, I might vote for Vinnie. Collier Counties long past history of hiring criminals for Sheriff needs some re-juvination.

Not that Vinnie is a criminal. Ha!

There was a time when I thought Rambosk was the better candidate for sheriff. But, after researching the CCSO and the budget and talking to a lot of deputies and seeing how the CCSO has declined over the years it is clear that its time for a change (like Ortino says). Another writer talked about removing all the incumbents and I agree, and that includes removing Rambosk. I am very excited about Ortino qualifying, and he has my vote for sure. The deputies, and the citizens, deserve to have Victor as our next sheriff. The bad guys better get out of Collier County!

I know a past article's blog entries referred to how Rambosk is the only one with any current Law Enforcement officer credentials. Does becoming Sheriff automatically grant such status?

I'm just not comfortable with the idea of a Sheriff who isn't able to function as an LEO (not to mention one with any recent officer experience).

Victor Oritno is a great guy. There's no doubt in my mind what kind of Sheriff he'll be. I'm very happy he was the first to qualify!

Victor Ortino has my vote..... all the way!

Qualifying for my vote is a lot harder.

pauls, you make a valid point, to a degree. Hunter had no such experience when he was elected sheriff. Do you know how many arrests Hunter has made? the answer would surprise you. Hunter is a politician. Rambosk was a cop, many years ago. But for 20 years he too has been a politician and an administrator, not a cop. And as I have said before, he is unwilling and I think unable to see the problems that infect the CCSO. He wants to be sheriff to continue the status quo, to fudge stats, to fleece the taxpayers, to secure his retirement benefits/pension....... Ortino has seen, like so many in Collier County, how the deputies have been mistreated and mistreat the public, and the how's and why's of the corruption in the CCSO. Ortino is ready, willing and able to tackle those problems. Ortino was a cop, and left the profession for his own reason, not because he was fired or incapable. Don't let the ad hominem attacks so easily convince you otherwise. Get the facts -- Ortino has been open and honest, and will be so as Sheriff. Try to get that attitude from the current administration at the CCSO that Rambosk is a BIG part of. Good luck! Ortino being a P.I. for so many years, and a very successful business man, in two businesses simultaneously, easily make him AT LEAST as qualified as the one time years ago cop and politician/bureaucrat that Rambosk is. Vote ORTINO! ORTINO!

Victor Ortino for Sheriff. And he will make a great Sheriff.

Long wind,
Ortino was indeed fired. Let him do an interview in the paper and explain it. Let's get the records too. He is not qualified in the least.

#13 Posted by ww2vet on May 12, 2008 at 5:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

ww2vet didn't you vote for Katherine Harris, over Bill Nelson? How can anybody take you seriously?

#14 Posted by Ironside on May 12, 2008 at 6 p.m. (Suggest removal)

longtimecitizen...Ortino pick you up at the Day labor? Promise you a job? If you and the other citizens of this County are prepared to go backwards, then cast your vote for Ortino. I'm not saying he isn't a great guy and all that; but he is not Sheriff material here in this county. He should go to a smaller County and get his feet wet first. Collier S.O. has a multitude of programs in effect and it's applications and processes are not for someone with a minuscule of law enforcement experience to waltz in and grab hold of; especially someone who hasn't practiced law enforcement in any form for over 20 years. Ortino is out of his element and would drown quickly. Rambosk knows what needs to be fixed or changed and is capable of correcting the deficiencies. I understand Rambosk is being penalized by the Hunter haters; but let's get down to brass tacks on what is best for the protection of our people and property in this County...Rambosk!

ITS TIME FOR CHANGE!!!!! VOTE ORTINO!!!! Rambosk has been under Hunter to long.....nothing will change. Stop the spending, stop putting 5 cops on routine traffic stop....get some good morale going the CCSO...somethings gotta give....!!!!!

I see we have the entire Ortino camp out in force today. Good for you, but your efforts will fail. Ortino is indeed a nice guy, but he's no Sheriff. You need more than a nice guy. Yes, Vic was fired from the FHP for time card fraud, appealed and was offered his job back. He declined. And no, being elected Sheriff does not make you a real cop. Vic would be away for at least four months at the basic Law Enforcement Academy so he would be able to carry a gun and make an arrest. Great. And if he graduated, he'd have to go through a 6 week Field Training session, riding with the road patrol deputies so he can "learn the ropes" Again, Great. Why don't we just hire the nicest guy from the local nice school?

#17 Posted by Ry42 on May 12, 2008 at 7:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Rambosk will not make changes. Williams is pulling all the strings & will continue to do so. Rambosk wastes taxpayer money. He hired his friend in as Building Facility Manager (not sure of the exact title) at around $130,000 year & he's now going to the police academy. Why when there is a hiring freeze for deputies? If he wants to be a cop he should get hired in at the bottom at that pay not at $130,000 a year. Or is it just so he can get high risk retirement? Something smells. Mr. Young who held the job before he retired only made around $70-75,000 a year & was not certified. What a waste of tax payer money & the deputies should be boiling over this. A guy hired at $130,000 a year who gets to go to the academy. I suspect if Rambosk is hired you'll see many many more people leave the agency at a rate higher than they currently are. Then watch out Collier County.

We need to purge this county of all bureaucrats. We have a better way then the French a couple hundred years ago - we can vote.

Out with the old, in with the new. The only fact that any voter needs to assess is if the candidate is a bureaucrat or not.

Rambosk is a bureaucrat all the way. 100% He must not get elected.

#19 Posted by cornandbeans on May 12, 2008 at 8:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Toesmom, Rambosk has not hired anyone, he's not the Sheriff. Your disgruntled deputy has you snowed with B.S. Blame Hunter, Kevin is not in charge, yet. But when he is he will clean up, including your bad boy who hates it there.

#20 Posted by Ry42 on May 12, 2008 at 8:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I have no disgruntled deputy snowing me with BS. I've lived in this county for a long long time I see what's going on. The public sees. Kevin will not clean up anything. I think that some things will come to light in the months ahead about what is really going on there. You're just mad I posted about the Building man hired it at almost twice the last guy & now he's going to the academy. If Kevin truly is going to clean house he needs to state so publicly & say who is going to go. He will not make discipline & rules consistent across the board. It'll be the same old same old.

I keep seeing talk that Hunter wasn't an officer before becoming Sheriff, so then could someone explain the following to me as I was not living here until 1994? (Taken from the CCSO website)

Career with the CCSO:

Became Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff Aubrey Rogers in 1979

Promoted to Major Chief of Administration and Special Operations in 1981

Commanded the Narcotics Unit with the Drug Enforcement Administration

Developed and commanded SWAT team

Supervised Training, Data Processing, Finance, Budget, Planning & Research and the Communications Center

Elected Sheriff of Collier County in 1988, and re-elected in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004

Momstoe,
Kevin doesn't need to prove anything. He is the most qualified for the job. On the other hand, Vic needs to prove that he CAN do the job. I don't think he can. Too much bad history. People will always wonder.

Kevin= experience, education and integrity

VicO= hai karate and a very bad haircut

Interesting propaganda being spread by Ortino supporters. Whatever problems exist in the sheriff's department, all indicators are that only a minute number of deputies are so unhappy that they would support Ortino.

Rambosk is the only rational choice.

I asked Mr Ortino at a bike rally in golden gate awhile back if elected what he would do about the problem with illegals in naples and he said he'd do nothing. there here cause they want to work, ahhh wrong answer. his take on illegals who broke the law If its a misdemeanor they should stay. all in all he's a sanctuary county guy which means he doesn't have my vote

#27 Posted by grouper25 on May 13, 2008 at 9:47 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Ortino will be very soft on illegal immigration.

He told me at an event that he didn't want to get involved with that issue when he was sheriff. Something about his wife...

Not an issue! It's the biggest issue out there right now.

He sounded very Obama-like.Ortino, Obama, Ortino, Obama.

My vote is with Kevin Rambosk! He gets it.

#28 Posted by sunnidaz on May 13, 2008 at 4:03 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Sunnidaz,
What rank are you at CCSO? The attitude shows. Morale, Morale, Morale. Ortino is Italian and his wife is Irish. Ortino’s take on Illegal’s is that there are many Hispanic legal citizens in this area and profiling is a poor practice. He told me that he will prosecute criminals and assist ICE in deporting them accordingly.

Ortino is the man for the Sheriff's job.

The troopers do not deny the charges, but say such claims were routine for years in Collier County, and were never questioned by superiors.

Vote KEVIN RAMBOSK on August 26!
