Florida Gulf Coast University star softball player Carmen Paez added to her accolades. She was named to the second team of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Team, on Thursday.

Paez was named the Atlantic Sun’s Player of the Year and also was one of 25 semifinalists for the national player of the year. She did not survive the cut to the 10 finalists for that honor.

The District III team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in the states of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. To be nominated, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, a starter or important reserve, and must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher.

“Carmen reaffirms the adage that it is never too late to start over again,” said head coach Dave Deiros. “She took full advantage of her academic and athletic opportunities, deservedly reaping many successes in the process and opening other doors that were previously off limits.’’

Paez, a senior, was one of four Atlantic Sun Conference student-athletes named to the District III team. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in April.

On the field, Paez ranked among the NCAA leaders in most offensive categories including home runs, batting average and RBI.

In one season in the A-Sun, she cracked the top 10 in the record books in five different categories.

For the season, Paez hit .425 with 22 homers, just four shy of an A-Sun single-season record, 68 RBI, and 76 runs scored. Her 22 home runs ranked third in the NCAA this season, which resulted in several teams pitching around her; she coaxed 84 walks, the fifth most in NCAA history. She had a .928 slugging percentage and an on base percentage of .638.
