Sports News for Kids: FGCU athletics holding camps in handful of sports
The Florida Gulf Coast University athletic department has released the schedule for its various summer camps and clinics. For more information or to register for any of the following camps, go to www.fcguathletics.com.
The men's basketball program will host two summer camps in June. They will be led by FGCU coaches, current and former players and local high school coaches. The Skills Day Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 9 through 12. It's for boys and girls who will be in the third through eighth grades next fall. Campers will be split into age and skill-appropriate groups. The cost is $250 and all campers receive a T-shirt.
Dave Balza's Overnight Camp runs June 16 to 19, beginning at 9:30 a.m. the first day and ending at 4 p.m. on the last. Day camp hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. for boys entering grades 5 through 12. Supervised overnight lodging will be provided in air-conditioned, four-bedroom suites. All meals are included and will be provided on campus. The cost is $450 for overnight campers, $400 for daily commuters. All campers will receive an official Eagles jersey, basketball and camper evaluation form.
Karl Smekso's Women's Basketball Camp, for those entering grades 5 through 12, is June 23 to 36 and both overnighters and commuters are welcome. Camp runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., except for the last day when the session ends at 5 p.m. All housing situations are the same as the men's camp. The cost is $395 for overnight
campers and $345 for commuters, which includes lunch and dinner. There is a $20 discount for those who register by May 16.
The FGCU Boys Soccer Day Camp is June 16 through 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for boys ages 6 to 13. It will be held at the North Collier Regional Park in Naples. The cost is $190 for half-days (9 a.m. to noon) and $250 for full days. The Boys Soccer Overnight Camp at FGCU will be held June 25 to 28. It's for ages 12 through 18 and the cost of the camp is $495 for overnighters and $395 for commuters.
Women's soccer coach Jim Blankenship's Elite Camp runs June 15 to 19 and is for ages 13 through 18. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. It costs $450 for overnighters and $350 for commuters. Blankenship's Day Camp is June 9 to 13. For ages 6 through 14, the camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Cost is $225 for full-day campers
and $100 for half-day (9 to 11 a.m.) attendees.
Neal Studd's Swimming Camps offer three sessions: June 23 to 27 (half-days, $200), July 7 to 11 (full days, $375) and July 28 to Aug. 1 (overnight, $525). They are for ages 8 and up. Elite swimmers will be given separate training and instruction. Day camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Half-day camp is from 8:30-11:30 a.m.

The Fort Myers Miracle minor league baseball team is set to offer its third annual Special Needs Kids Baseball Camp from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hammond Stadium. The camp is open to the first 25 individuals with a physical or mental challenge age 17 and under.
Miracle players and coaches will teach kids the baseball skills of hitting, throwing, catching and fielding. The camp affords participants the opportunity to experience the feeling of being on a professional baseball field.
The camp is free to all who attend. To register a child for the camp, call 768-4210 or e-mail sgliner@miraclebaseball.com. Include your name, the child's name, full address, phone number and any special needs for your child.
Dave Clark, a Cape Coral resident and polio survivor, is helping the Miracle again this year. Clark, currently a professional baseball scout, has put together these camps all over the country.
Kids are asked to bring their own baseball gloves. An adult chaperon is required to be in attendance with each child attending the clinic. Each participant will receive four tickets for that evening’s baseball game against the Tampa Yankees as well as lunch following the camp.

The North Naples Junior Major Marlins recently won their second consecutive Southwest Florida Minors tournament held at Golden Gate Park. The tournament ran April 19 through 28.
With only one returning player from the 2007 team, the North Naples group went 5-0 during the tournament, winning the final game 9-6 against the Greater Naples Cubs. The Marlins' roster consisted of Ryan Schnieder, Nick Denove, Paul Costain, Caleb Rigsby, Jon Cosme, Chad Rex, Mike Maloney, Taylor Kelly, Frank Mello Morales and Chadd Heersma.
“The kids rallied all year and consistently made plays to win,” Coach Pete Denove said. “Great effort by the assistant coaches to support their efforts.”

The sixth annual Community School of Naples Future Stars Basketball Camp will be June 16 through 20 at the school's fieldhouse. The camp, which runs from 8 a.m. to noon each day, is open the boys and girls entering grades 3 through 8. All campers get a T-shirt and a ball. The Titan Basketball Academy is June 23 through 27 at Golden Gate High School. The camp is for boys and girls entering grades 4 through 9, and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $75 per camper and includes a camp t-shirt. Spaces are limited so register as soon as possible.

The 2008 Summer Shootout Basketball Clinic at Ft Myers High School is June 23 to 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The camp is for boys and girls entering fourth through ninth grades and is designed to teach and improve upon basketball fundamentals. The cost is $140 per child. The Greater Naples YMCA will start offering programs for youth in Ave Maria this summer, including half-day specialty camps and a youth basketball league. All programs will be held at Ave Maria Grammar & Preparatory School and are open to the public (participants need not be residents of Ave Maria).

The Don Stewart Basketball Camp will offer four sessions for youngsters this summer starting in June and running through July.
The first session is June 2 through 6 at Naples Christian Academy, 3161 Santa Barbara Blvd. The classes run daily from 9 a.m. to noon. The second session is from 9 to noon June 9 through 13 at First Baptist Academy, 3000 Orange Blossom Rd.
The cost is $100 for one week or $175 for both. All participants receive a t-shirt. A camp store with drinks and snacks will be available.
The camp also will be offered June 30 through July 3 and July 7 through 11 at the North Naples Community Park. If you are attended these camps, make checks payable to Collier Parks and Rec. There will be no camp on July 4.
Stewart, the Lely High School boys' coach, is a 10-time Southwest Florida Coach of the Year. He will be joined by Stacey Stewart, a high school coach in Georgia, and Scott Stewart, a Lely grad who started at the University of Florida.

The Coach Mark Ivey Cougar Football Camp will be held on June 2 through 5 at Barron Collier High School. The camp is for all athletes in grades 4 through 9. The Seahawk Baseball Instructional School will be June 9 through 13 at Community School of Naples. The camp is for ages 7 to 15 from 8:30 a.m. to noon daily.
The cost is $150 per camper. The school includes a final-day pizza party at 11:30 a.m. for all campers. Register by June 2 for a guaranteed spot and T-shirt. Late registration will be accepted if space allows.
The camp will stress fundamentals, discipline and teamwork, as well as mental intangibles. Players should wear a light-colored T-shirt, baseball pants, and a baseball hat, and should bring baseball cleats, running shoes and a baseball glove. A bat and catcher's gear may also be brought.

The top youth soccer company in the U.S., Challenger Sports, will hold one of their nationwide British Soccer training camps for the Greater Naples YMCA.

Winning Ways of Southwest Florida has set the dates for its upcoming summer camps. The camp will be run by Winning Ways president Tom Kane and former Valparaiso University player Zoran Viskovic. The cost is $60 for the two-day session, which includes a brown bag lunch.
There also will be summer sessions of the shooting and ball-handling camp starting June 5. The four-week sessions are for boys and girls ages 10 and older. Each class will be at Gulfview from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays. The cost is $69 for the four weeks, which includes a t-shirt.
Winning Ways also will offer a post player camp and a guard and perimeter play camp starting June 5. Both four-week sessions run from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays at Gulfview. Each camp costs $69 for the four classes.
An advanced shooting class will run for four weeks starting June 5. It also will be Thursdays at Gulfview with classes going from 8 to 9 p.m. The cost is $69. There also will be a three-day shooting camp June 2 to 4 at Gulfview. Each class goes from 4 to 7 p.m.
Winning Ways' Nothing But Nets camp will run in two week-long sessions this summer at the Estero Recreation Center. Session I is from June 9 through 13, while Session II is Aug. 11 through 15. The camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. It is for boys and girls ages 6 to 16.
The boys and girls Elite camps have been moved to St. John Neumann High School because of construction at Cape Coral High School. The girls camp is June 16 through 20, while the boys Elite camp runs from June 23 through 27.
The half-day shooting camp for boys and girls is June 30 through July 2 at Fort Myers High School. The half-day position camp runs at the same time and place. There also is a Nothing But Nets Camp, which you can register for at www.leeparks.org.

USA South Volleyball will hold two summer programs at the Estero Recreation Center. Session A, which is for setters and liberos, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Session B for hitters will be July 8 through 31 at the same times.

The Naples Hurricanes Pop Warner football and cheerleading teams have opened registration for the upcoming 2008 spring and fall seasons. The Hurricanes are set to start their third season. There are six football teams and six cheer squads ranging in age from 5 to 14.
The spring season starts this week and runs from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday through May 22.
To sign up, bring a copy of a state birth certificate and an original physical form to one of the registrations. Spring football registration is $50, and a $100 deposit is required to reserve a roster spot for the fall season. The deposit will be applied toward the $250 fall fee. Photos will be taken at registration, so participants must be present.

The final Naples Titans Youth Football and Cheerleading League spring camps are Tuesday and Thursday. The sessions run from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at East Naples Middle School.
Football is open to players ages 6 through 13, and cheerleaders ages 5-14, and a copy of a birth certificate and a 2008 physical is required to sign up.

The Naples Gators Youth Football, Cheer, Dance & Flag Football League is holding registrations from 6 to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at the Fleischmann Park field. Sign-ups last until May 22. Only a few spots are left for the 75-, 105- and 115-pound teams. The Gators are accepting names for the waiting lists for the 90- and 125-pound teams. Spaces are still available for all cheerleading and flag football teams.
The Gators tackle, cheer and dance leagues start their fall seasons July 14. Flag football starts the second week of August. There are no boundaries which means that anyone from the Naples area can join. The Naples Gators practice and play all their home games at Fleischmann Park. The Senior Academy is for boys and girls ages 13 through 18. The training session runs now through July 31. The Junior Academy for ages 8 through 12 runs through July 31.

The inaugural Lauren's First-and-Goal Football Camp to raise money for pediatric brain tumor research is June 8 at the University of South Florida.
The camp is named in honor of 11-year-old Lauren Loose, who has been fighting brain tumors since she was 2. All proceeds benefit Lauren's First and Goal foundation which is a charitable organization created to raise funds for pediatric brain tumor research and support pediatric cancer services. The minimum donation is $25 per athlete and the camp is open to students entering grades eight through 12 in the fall.
The athletes at the camp are coached by and gain exposure to many college coaches in one location. Players are divided into small groups by position and age for offensive and defensive instruction. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the camper-to-coach ratio is approximately 8 to 1. College coaches all receive information on every rising senior at the camp.
