Two things you can say about politics in Bonita Springs:
1. The victors are gracious to the losers; 2. The victors, as well as the losers, as pretty funny. Doggone funny.
Roasters of former mayor Jay Arend, defeated by Ben Nelson, stayed up late to write some of this material:
“This man was dedicated to his job. He was the first one at Dunkin’ Donuts each morning.”
“Those were the same people on Jay’s fundraising committee for his campaign,” said head roaster Nigel Fullick, of Arend’s neighbors honoring the former potato farmer with two spuds rather than a whole truckload.
Nelson joshed about the increasingly receding hairlines of mayors No. 1, Paul Pass, through No. 3: “Four years from now, your mayor won’t have a head.”
There were “awards” for Arend’s duty as the official hot dog griller at seemingly every event — including those not even sponsored by the city.
When the city looks around for sources of extra money, it could bottle and sell the magic of this roast. It’s what sets Bonita apart. The rest of our area from time to time could use a dose of good will and fellowship, especially among competitors.
