Editorial: Improvement is possible for Vanderbilt Beach

Collier County Commissioner Frank Halas came forward with his idea for a fishing pier at Vanderbilt Beach. Though the concept had some appeal, he neglected to consult with as many neighbors as possible early on and was unable to earn their support later.

He had the good grace to call it off.

There is no need for him to be a spoilsport now and rule out support for any scaled back plan for other improvements at the same site at the end of Vanderbilt Beach Road. Better bathrooms and showers might make some sense, though with private-sector snack shops across the street the further idea of a county-run grill seems ripe for cutting. A county staffer’s concerns about high prices for hamburgers at nearby waterfront eateries rings hollow in view of snack prices with county-licensed vendors at Clam Pass and Tigertail Beach.

What is a good idea for sure is the county working with expansion plans already in the works at Delnor-Wiggins State Park a few miles north — and here is another plug for mini-bus park-and-ride service to public access points.

Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
