The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team stranded the tying run on second in the top of the ninth, and the Eagles lost to USC Upstate, 2-1, in the opener of their final Atlantic Sun Conference series on Thursday night in Spartanburg, S.C.
Trailing 2-0, Ozzie Borrell homered with one out in the top of the ninth to cut the deficit in half. Casey Coleman singled, and Stephen Rassel reached on a fielder’s choice, erasing Coleman.
After Vinnie Scarduzio walked, Graig Smith grounded out to first to end the game.
USC Upstate (24-28, 16-15) scored single runs in the first and fifth off FGCU starter Richard Bleier. The first-inning run was unearned.
The team’s finish the A-Sun regular season with a doubleheader today. The first game starts at 1 p.m.
FGCU (37-14, 24-7) already clinched the league’s regular-season title with a sweep of ETSU last weekend.
