Local golf: Meyer wins U.S. Open local qualifier in Hollywood

Dennis Meyer arrived on the state’s East Coast ready to play his U.S. Open qualifying practice round after flying there from his hometown in Iowa.

But Meyer, who has a teaching academy at Quality Inn & Suites Golf Resort in Naples, had an unnerving surprise when he got to the course and looked in his bag.

“My putter was missing,’’ Meyer said. “Somebody stole it at the airport.’’

So Meyer rushed to a discount store, bought a similar putter, had the length cut down, the grip re-done, and played a handful of holes.

Thursday, Meyer went out and shot a 71 to win the local qualifier at The Club at Emerald Hills in Hollywood.

“I woke up, went out and played really solid,’’ said Meyer, who had four birdies from within four feet and three-putted twice. “I played really good from tee to green.’’

Meyer, 48, advanced to sectional qualifying and will play at Jupiter Hills on June 2.

Meyer, who also has golf schools in Minnesota and Tennessee, made it to sectional qualifying in 2000, and played with future Masters champion Zach Johnson.
