Golden Gate schools were on lockdown for about 40 minutes this morning after a prekindergarten teacher at Golden Gate Elementary School saw a man walking down the street with a gun in his hand.
The lockdown has just been lifted.
Collier County School District spokesman Joe Landon said the teacher saw the man before 9 a.m. near the school, at 491120th Place S.W.
He said the teacher went into the building and the school notified authorities.
Landon said Superintendent Dennis Thompson put all Golden Gate schools on lockdown as a precaution.
"It was a precaution," Landon said. "We don't believe the students were in any immediate danger."
Landon said Collier County sheriff’s deputies apprehended the suspect a short time later.
Collier County sheriff's spokeswoman Karie Partington said the Sheriff's Office received a call about a man with a gun about 8:55 a.m. She said officers located the young man, who was found to be in possession of a BB gun.

He couldn't afford gas, he was afraid of being attacked by a coyote, and he just lost his old job as a painter.

The teacher did the right thing, and also highlighted the need for stricter security and cameras at campuses throughout Collier.
