ESTERO Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott called criticism of his use of Barack Obama’s middle name in a speech on Monday a “huge double standard” and said he had no particular intention when he chose his words.
“There was no intention,” he said. “I simply stated his name.”
While addressing the jam-packed crowd of 8,800 at Germain Arena prior to Gov. Sarah Palin’s appearance, Scott said, “On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened.”
The crowd at Germain cheered wildly at Scott’s remark, but the Palin campaign wasn’t too happy, according to a press release sent to several news organizations.
The release read: “We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November.”
Scott said the campaign statement didn’t bother him and he vigorously defended his use of Obama’s full name.
“Why would I regret calling somebody by his middle name?” he said.
“To me, I’m perceiving, I’m hearing, a huge, huge double standard,” he added.
Many political pundits charge that emphasis on Obama’s middle name, which is of Muslim-origin, is meant to reinforce rumors that he is a Muslim. Obama is actually a practicing Christian.
Republican presidential nominee John McCain himself chastised a supporter’s emphasis on Obama’s middle name in February, after a Cincinnati radio DJ referred to “Barack Hussein Obama” three times during his introduction of McCain.
McCain later told the press that such emphasis was not appropriate.
“I absolutely repudiate such comments,” McCain said in February. “It will never happen again.”
Scott, when told by a reporter that some people saw use of the name as an attempt to frighten people, responded, “Well, what is ‘Barack Obama?’ That’s not ‘Mike Scott’ or ‘Jim Smith.’”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Mike Scott is a BIG spender of tax money and campaign money.

I can't see that Sheriff Scott said anything wrong, hey that's Barack Obama's
middle name. Even the Rev. Jeremiah Wright called him Barack Hussein Obama and then said it again Barack Hussein Obama.
We have to stop being politically correct in this country and not be afraid of who we are going to offend. We still have freedom of speech, don't we?

This is an issue? It's his middle name! If he doesn't like it he should change it. It's better than Barack "I'm a Socialist" Obama, which is equally true.

Good job Mike. You spoke with dignity as usual. We still love having you as sheriff. I guess you would get lambasted for saying Richard Milhous Nixon or John Fitzgerald Kennedy too. Oh well, PC out-of-control.

Talk about PC run amuck - is it or isn't it Obama's middle name?
#10 Posted by BlackCat on October 6, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. (Suggest removal)
What is the purpose of using it? Like we would confuse Barack Obama with Barack Hussein Obama? The only reason people mention his middle name is to make inflammatory statements. The Republican Party is trying so desperately to scare some idiots into thinking that his middle name equates somehow to Muslim extremism.
#11 Posted by starttheinsanity on October 6, 2008 at 5:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Come on, you're all being disingenuous. The repeated use of his middle name is to try and equate him with Islam and y'all know it.
He didn't name himself, he isn't Muslim and it's a pathetic attempt from the right to distract from the real issues since this is a total non-issue.
McCain is Irish, so based on that I guess we can assume he is connected with the IRA?

Please give me a break, if it makes you think of Saddam Hussein then so be it. But plain and simple that is his middle name and whatever connotation's arise this is Barack Hussein Obama name.

Beachy, I totally agree. If we can't call one canidate by his name then it should apply to all. We shouldn't be allowed to use John **Cains last name. Remember at the time in this country being a "mick" was a derogatory term.
If the democrats want to be ridiculous, let's go all the way.

#17 Posted by rickyd2000 on October 6, 2008 at 5:54 p.m. (Suggest removal)
SFGrp, yes it's his middle name, but how come no one is using Joe Biden's middle name? Let's face it, it's because the GOP thinks that some people will hear "Hussein" and tremble in fear. It's just a name. I guess the Republicans don't think their constituents are very smart if they have to resort to those tactics.
Also, "Scotch" is a distilled liquor, and "Protestant" is a religion.
I think you mean that McCain is Scottish-Irish, which he is.

This Florida sheriff does not represent all of the citizens of Lee County. This partisan lawman needs to immediately step down. This is 2008, but somehow I was just taken back to the old Florida of the 1920's. Long before 911, Sadam Hussein, and the every day terms of radical Islam, Barac Hussein Obama received his name like any other American. Now an elected Florida uses the modern day tactic of lynch by association to score political points.
He knew what he was doing and why he said what he said. This was despicable Mike Scott, and you ought to apologize to the citizens of Lee County and the rest of the sheriff's of the great state of Florida.

Its just a middle name, and an effective tool for a dramatic delivery. It's common practice in public speaking.
Sheriff Scott has done a great job with the LCSO, and is one of the most personable individuals I've ever met.
But what I find hard to believe, is that a well publicized event such as this, that the McCain/Palin camp wouldn't have read and pre-approved all of the guest's speeches before they took the stage? That would be irresponsible politically, so I'm not crazy about their press release regarding the matter....

We are becoming a nation of haters. "If you don't believe in my beliefs you are evil". Same with religion unfortunately. Keep fooling your selves’ people, by calling a lie the truth, and the truth a lie...In the end both will perish the ignominious death of being known simply as a FOOL!
The Lee Sheriff needs to apologize to the citizens of Lee County, and the remaining 66 sheriff's offices in the state of Florida. This was not a good day for law enforcement, and other public servants, that this Constitutional Officer uses the office and the uniform of the sheriff to couch his rhetoric in partisan political speech.
He's not just the sheriff of the Republicans party of Lee County!
Or is he?

On Hardball, Ms. Noonan and Gene Robinson were discussing the latest stupidity from Sarah Palin and the "Hussain" comment by a County Sheriff. After the usual banter, Chris Mattews turn to Peggy and said, "Well? What do you think of this tactic?"

I hope all of you that are voting for Obama are right and he does not have radical ties, muslim influences, or socialistic ambitions. But I guess we are all going to have to wait to find out over the next four years. If it turns out he has those characteristics I hope those who voted for him will at least say that they were wrong.
Of course it may be too late by then. It may also be that all of the obvious facts that point to his mindset are wrong as well. We shall all find out together.

The Republican Party knows they are losing the race. As usual – time to sell the fear. They have done the same the last 2 elections. Each time the race is closer - the dirt gets deeper. If any of you are parents - would you tell your kids to act the same way during a close scoring baseball game? I would tell my kids, dig in, play your best. Don’t be a sore loser. The Republics say call em names, make them guilty by association, tease them because of their ethnic heritage. Mike Scott did not just say his name, the emphasis was solely on Barack’s middle name. His intention is guilty as charged. Anyone who hears the sound bite knows it is true. I’m tire of the old guard – bunch of righteous, double standard losers at best. Bring in Barack!!! He has done a great job keeping a level head, positive image and on the issues that affect us all.

ArmyBrat: then why do you insist in using it? Scare tactics, that's all. I guess that because you thing that someone with the name Hussein=Sadam Hussein=Islam and that we'll all think that.
Apparently the majority of us are smarter than that, since Obama is ahead in the polls.
Get over your racist, xenophobic comments. Reading what someone wrote about Pakistan is a laugh; y'all have no clue about the world! Small minds is all you have, but the majority of us can think beyond a name and concentrate on the real issues.

beachykeen.... I agree that it is scare tatics. Why did his middle name or his associations only become an issue at such a late time in the game. Because of the polls. However what if his associations are correct? Would that bother you? Is his religious preference important to you? Not trying to argue with you just trying to see where you are coming from.

Educational Background of the Candidates
With America facing historic debt, multiple war fronts, stumbling health care, a weakened dollar, all-time high prison population, skyrocketing Federal spending, mortgage crises, bank foreclosures, etc. etc., this is an unusually critical election year.
Let's look at the educational background of the candidates and see what they bring to the job:
Obama:
Occidental College - Two years.
Columbia University - B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations.
Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude
& Biden :
University of Delaware - B.A. in history and B.A. in political science.
Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)
vs.
McCain:
United States Naval Academy - Class rank 894 out of 899 (meaning that, like George Bush, McCain was at the bottom of his class)
& Palin:
Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester
North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study
University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journali sm
Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester
University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in journalism
Now, which team are you going to hire to lead the most influential nation in the world?
Please send this information to your friends and colleagues who vote!

Obama's list of things you can't talk about:
His middle name
His minister
His friends
His voting record
His experience
The contributions to his campaign
Acorn
Talking about any of these things makes you a racist and if you don't vote for him you are also a racist.
Big Deal Michael Joesph Scott used Barack Hussein Obama's Full name~if Barack is offended tell him to talk to someone about changing the name given to him by his parents at birth.
Vote for Sheriff M.J.Scott 2008!

info:
I wouldn't want a candidate to be Muslim, nor would I vote for one who is; radical Islamic extremism being what it is, there is no place for a Muslim as leader of the Unites States, although most Muslims are not extremists.
Obama has said he is a Christian and has attended church for years, so why would I not believe that? Because it doesn't suit me? That is spin, and we have enough of it. It is easier for some to spread lies than than to have to live with the truth.
If he is a Jew, Protestant, Catholic, whatever, it doesn't matter to me.

McSame/Failin are down 8 points in the polls. George Bush has a 22% approval rating. They will try anything at this point. Mike Scott is a weenie.
Barrack Hussein Obama will crush this weak republican ticket because Bush has Shiite the bed for our country and it will take a while to clean up his mess. (Pun fully intended)
Saddam Hussein would have had a better chance to beat Obama for that fact. He did less to injure our country than W.

Y'all are sneaky, I have to hand it to you! I got so involved in the "name" thing that I completely neglected the fact that McCain and Palin are totally unqualified to run the country.
For all of you who find Palin's "wholesomeness and Christian values" so refreshing, then how about McCain's past as far as his "extracurricular activites" go? Not so wholesome there.
And how about McCain's and Palin's intelligence? Their academic records are pretty bad. And yes, they count--a LOT.
And their experience? McCain is a crony of Dubya's and look where 8 years of GWB got us.
Palin left Wasilla in debt, raised taxes, lied about the bridge to nowhere, can't seem to handle her family very well, isn't even trusted by her own campaign team to give a press conference...I don't know where to even STOP. There's so much!
Anyway, you're right! What's in a name? :)

emmagee: actually, I respect you because you come right out and say why you aren't voting for him. So many people won't do that; instead they will make up insidious lies about Obama to cover their racism.
Many women will for for Palin simply because she is a woman (and just as many will NOT vote for her because she is a woman); both are sexism.
However, I truly believe that most of us have evolved and can look beyond color --or even gender-- and vote for the candidate that they feel will do the best job.

I WOULD vote for McCain as the lesser of two evils--but that would not be voting for what is best for the country. We need a TOTAL change of leadership and that won't happen with either of these.

I understand why you wouldn't wanna vote and maybe your right, maybe mccain is just the lesser of the two evils, but I rather vote and take chance and hope we get the lesser of the evils.

I like Chris Rock's opinion. He is going to vote for the man with one house.
When asked if he is voting for Barack because he is black he said he's not voting for him because he was black, and he would not vote for Flava Flav if he was running because he is black.
Look beyond color, look beyond gender. Barack is polished, educated and tired of watching his country take a beating. Biden only strengthens the ticket with his foreign policy experience.
Seeing Russia from your house is not foreign policy experience...
I think I actually agree with Liestopper on something... WTF???

Remember McDougall trying to give Terri Shiavo water? He used his own agenda above and beyond his duties as sheriff. The ironic thing was that our estate planning law firm got so many calls from our clients after the Shiavo case and they all wanted to make sure that this would never happen to them and they would not be artificially provided food and water when it would only prolong their dying. I know that this sheriff is a republican; however, he better learn from his predecessor that putting your own beliefs about those of the citizens of your community may backfire on you.

The Hatch Act explicitly states that an individual:
1. May not use their official authority or influence to interfere with an election
2. May not engage in political activity while on duty
3. May not engage in political activity while in uniform
4. May not wear political buttons on duty
I know it worked for Rambosk, but stupidity is not an excuse for breaking the law. Bye-bye sheriff scott, and bye-bye Federal grants.

Rasputin,
You are totally wrong on all of the above about the Hatch Act. All he said was Barack Hussein Obama. Is ther anything wrong with calling a man by his full name.
How about Hillary (ROTTEN) OOPS! I mean Hillary Rodham Clinton. Oh btw poor Hillary has to sit on the side line and wait for her chance next time.

A Harvard education isn't what it used to be. Impossible to give tax breaks to 95% of the public when only 60% actually pay any taxes.
In America we call welfare and forceable government redistribution of income.

You republicans are missing the point:
The point is that all these scum are using his middle name only because it incorrectly and inaccurately associates him with someone that most Americans would agree to hate. If his middle name was 'Scott' or 'Eugene' or anything else, you scum would not even be using it.
That is the reason we complain. Using his middle name serves no function other than a poor, non-creative, effort to smear him.
Is this simple enough for you to understand? It is not the use of his middle name, it is the motivation and purpose for which it is used.
For you Obama fans, I'm happy to say my father in North Carolina is voting for Obama and has already placed a sticker on his car. This is exciting b/c he is over 60 years old and has never voted for a democrat in his life!!! It is never too late to wake up and realize how badly the republican party damages working class Americans.
Wake up people!!! Palin is a very stupid person and McCain is just insane.

Is it important for the president and his family to exhibit Christian values in every aspect of their lives? John McCain broke his vows and deserted his crippled first wife. He is an adulterer, and maybe even a coward, for not honoring his vows. His second wife Cindy may be an adulteress as well. They were married in a lavish society wedding one month after McCain’s first marriage was dissolved. John McCain may be an adequate president, but are he, and his wife and family, adequate role models for our children. If John McCain becomes president, will I have to make excuses and explanations, to my son and other children, on the forgiveablity of divorce, the forgiveability of deserting a woman who was brought to the alter and bound in a covenant of love and devotion? John McCain’s behavior cannot be reconciled with any standard of moral fortitude to which I expect to hold my childen. Similarly, if Sarah Palin becomes vice president, will I have to explain to my daughter the acceptability of becoming a teenage mom? It does seem hypocritical all around.

A MARRIAGE BUILT ON LIES!
John and Cindy McCain had LIED to each other about their respective ages until AFTER they were married!
According to Cindy McCain, it wasn't until she read the newpaper's wedding announcments that she learned how old John McCain really was. She then confessed to him her real age.
The McCain's marriage was built on LIES!

Barack Obama said we need nobody's permmision to get bin Laden if we know where he is.

Ricky & Houdal, you both miss the point. Sheriff Scott was in uniform at this partisan event. I could care less that he mentioned Obama’s middle name, Hussein. The fact is that what he did is most likely a violation of the Hatch Act which was established to prevent certain employees from using their official authority or influence to interfere with an election. If Sheriff Scott had shown up not in uniform, I really wouldn’t give a blasted, nor would the Office of Special Counsel. Again, stupidity is no excuse...unless you seem to be republican.

And in the infinite wisdom of the majority of libs (notice how I was very careful here not to say "all?" Please take note it's an important distinction) don't attack the facts of a discussion. They resort to questioning the intent of the facts. Very poor way to respond. Keep trying though. The only way to get better at anything is to practice.
I did not attend law school. I would never want to limit my ability to generate income that way. Why should I have gone to law school when I have two of them working for me as needed. Although my wife did go to law school so I do have some knowledge of the process.

#96 Posted by aceholz on October 6, 2008 at 10:40 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Now an elected Florida sheriff uses the modern day tactic of LYNCH by ASSOCIATION to score political points and scare voters.
He knew what he was doing and why he said what he said. This was despicable Mike Scott, and you ought to apologize to the citizens of Lee County and the rest of the sheriff's of the great state of Florida.
I guess you are going to tell me next that this is God's country right! The real BIBLE BELT...where they tell it like it is.
Or is he?

And you people voted this semi-civilized back woods hick into office??
#112 Posted by myrealname on October 6, 2008 at 11:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Scott should not have been allowed to speak for the McCain/Palin campaign wearing his uniform. Does his opinion (racist) project the opinion of his entire community. I had the terrible feeling if we removed his uniform shirt we would find some pretty telling tatoos. Lee county citizens should call for his removal from office. What an idea use your official uniform to back up your racist ideas. Appalling. Oh, yeah, and when McCain cuts your medicare benefits (check out his platform), how will you feel then?
