Naples man hits parked cop car — with deputy inside writing a traffic ticket

— A Naples man faces DUI charges after a three-car crash on Collier Boulevard sent one deputy and one driver to Physician’s Regional Medical Center for minor injuries Friday night.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Artemio Godinez Sanchez, 30, of Naples, was traveling southbound on Collier Boulevard toward Manatee Road. A Collier County Sheriff’s officer was conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle on the southbound shoulder just north of Manatee Road. The patrol car emergency lights were on. Sanchez was driving while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and drifted onto the southbound shoulder where deputy, Robert Acres, 25, of Naples was sitting in his patrol car completing paperwork for the traffic stop.

The right-front end of Sanchez’s 1998 Buick sedan collided into the left side of the patrol car and continued south until the right-front end collided into the 2007 Honda sedan that had been stopped by the deputy. Sanchez’s vehicle rotated until it came to a final rest within Collier Boulevard’s southbound lanes facing a northerly direction. The other two vehicles traveled in a southerly direction on impact and came to a final rest in the area of the collision.

Sanchez and Acers were transported by Collier County EMS to Physician’s Regional Medical Center for minor injuries and were later released, FHP reports say.

The FHP report states the driver of the vehicle that had been pulled over for the traffic stop, Veselin Arabadzhiev, 35, of Maine, did not suffer any injuries.

Damage to the Sanchez’s vehicle was estimated at $10,000, damage to the 2005 Ford sedan patrol car was estimated at $10,000 and to Arabadzhiev’s 2007 Honda sedan at $5,000.

Sanchez was arrested for DUI, two counts of DUI with property damage, and DUI with personal injury.

Ironically, the deputy was conducting the traffic stop for Arabadzhiev’s failure to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle when the crash occurred, FHP reports say.

Saw this debacle on my way home from work. It didn't look to me like the patrol car suffered 10,000 in damage, I figure it just needed a new door and some new stickers (which might cost at most 5K) but I couldn't see too much more than that, as I was more concerned with getting home than the accident its self.

Might be corn and beans is Sanchez Liestopper. LOL

Glad Acres ( or is it Acers, spelled both ways in story) only had minor injuries, could've been a lot worse.

Wonder if Arabadzhiev still ended up with a traffic citation after all that?

Yes Jag, what was stupid about this? Are you going to spew more negativity like usual? Or perhaps you've turned over a new leaf and think that it was the drunk driver that was stupid...

I think that the best way to protect our officers from these drunk drivers and those that cannot drive at all due to lack of experience or excessice stupidity, there needs to be policy guiding them to effect traffic stops off the roadway if possible take a side street shoulder or parking lot. At least get them off the roadway or travel lane and away from traffic as much as possible. Sometimes they conduct the stops on the lanes of travel putting themselves in this great danger. Today the police cars are equiped with computers that facilitate the officer's needs and make thier lives easier while doing thier dangerous duties protecting us however this also requires them to sit in thier squad cars which is a death trap. We have too many reckless and careless drivers for them to put themselves in that level of danger on the roadways. I know there are times when the officer has no choice and the suroundings limit his/her's capability to conduct the stop at a safe location though this is not always the case especially at night where there are many access to vacant parking lots on the main highways available. This is usually when the drunk is out and about behind the wheel.
I'm glad to see that this time our hero walked away with minor injuries, usually thats not the case. My husband is a firefighter and he tells me how at times they have to block the lanes inorder to provide a protective barrier while they work on an injures person in a vehicle. Even with the size of thier trucks, and all the lights flashing, at times their apparatus gets struck by passing cars. Most of the times its rubber neck Joe who take's his eyes of the road to look at the scene instead of where he is going. Remember that Police Cars are not built like they were years ago. Plastic, rubber, fibergalss, and sheet metal does not serve as a shield of protection.
