NAPLES A hit-and-run crash on Interstate 75 early Monday morning has authorities looking for a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup truck after the driver hit an already disabled car and then struck a motorist who had stopped to assist.
FHP reports give this account: Gerald Guadlup, Jr., 34, of Cape Coral, lost control of his vehicle and crashed his 2006 Mitsubishi sedan in the northbound inside lane of the barrier wall of the Peace River Bridge near I-75 Mile Marker 166 in Charlotte County. FHP reports indicate that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Several motorists, including James Perrine, 24, of North Port, stopped to assist Guadlap.
Around 12:30 a.m., an unidentified motorist traveling in the center lane of I-75 struck Guadlap's disabled vehicle. As Perrine was attempting to move away from the scene, the unidentified vehicle then struck him on his left side and proceeded to leave the scene, an FHP report states.
Perrine was airlifted to the trauma center at Lee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Guadlap was taken to Charlotte Regional Hospital with minor injuries.
Damage to Guadlap's vehicle was estimated at $8,000 from the two incidents.
Based on witness statements, Florida Highway Patrol is looking for a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup with damage to the front consistent with colliding with a pedestrian.
