A week after signing Danick Bouchard, the Florida Everblades added another former Quebec junior hockey league star in Mathieu Roy, the team announced on Tuesday.
Bouchard said last week that first-year Blades coach Malcolm Cameron had told him Roy was coming to the team, but Cameron said the deal was not final at that time.
Apparently Cameron was just waiting for the team announcement, as he is also waiting on forward Justin Bowers, who told a Canadian newspaper in June that he was coming to the Everblades.
Cameron said Tuesday that there was no major hiccup regarding the announcement of Bowers’ contract.
As for Roy, the 2007-08 Pensacola Ice Pilot joins eight other forwards and three defensemen signed with the Blades for the upcoming season. That number does not include ‘07-08 ECHL All-Star forward Yannick Tifu, who was acquired in a trade last month. Tifu’s contract hasn’t been announced yet, but Cameron has said it’s a “formality,” and Tifu is listed as part of the Blades’ roster on the team’s Web site.
Roy, 21, was an offensive powerhouse during his four years in the Quebec Junior A hockey league. The 6-foot, 196-pound left winger had his best year in 2005-06, scoring 104 points in 65 games. He followed that up with 70 points in 63 games the following year, and 24 points in 20 playoff games.
Roy’s numbers dipped a bit with last-place Pensacola last season, when he scored 45 points while playing in 72 games.
“(Pensacola) obviously wasn’t as offensive last year,” said Cameron, who coached the Texas Wildcatters last season. “But (Pensacola) was one of our closest opponents geographically last season. I saw (Roy) a lot, and I just thought he played really well against us. It seemed like the bigger the game, the bigger he played.”
