PALMETTO RIDGE 35, GOLDEN GATE 7

In its five years as a Southwest Florida football rivalry, the Battle for the Gate hasn’t been much of a battle.

The five games have been decided by an average margin of 19.4 points, including a 35-7 victory for Palmetto Ridge on Friday night.

The Bears have beaten Golden Gate by four touchdowns in each of the last two meetings. They won 38-10 last year, ending the game on a 28-0 run.

On Friday, Palmetto Ridge trailed 7-6 before finishing with a 29-0 spurt. The Bears now have a 3-2 lead in the series with three straight wins.

The closest game in the series was the second meeting. Golden Gate won 21-19 in 2005, following a 46-26 triumph in the 2004 game.

MIAMI MONSIGNOR PACE 24, NAPLES 23

With the Golden Eagles struggling early and finishing with a bang in Friday’s 24-23 loss to Miami Monsignor Pace, the most consistent player in the game might have been place-kicker Puma Nuredini.

In his first varsity start, Nuredini showed off his powerful leg on kickoffs Friday. The senior put all five of his kickoffs into Pace’s end zone for touchbacks.

Nuredini was equally impressive on punts. He punted four times for Naples, averaging 40.3 yards. His longest was a 57-yarder in the first quarter.

The highlight of the night for the rookie kicker, however, came in the third quarter. Nuredini booted a 50-yard field goal with 1:26 to go in the period. The kick had enough leg to carry another 5 yards.

CAPE CORAL 17, IMMOKALEE 0

Take away the four turnovers and Immokalee’s 17-0 loss to Cape Coral might have been a different story. The Indians put together a total of 262 yards of offense to the Seahawks’ 227, but it was the three lost fumbles and the turnover on downs that made the difference.

After the game, first-year Immokalee coach Israel Gallegos pointed out to the team that the defense played well, until the end of the game when the Seahawks put up 17 fourth-quarter points on big plays.

LELY 42, BARRON COLLIER 21

Lely won an impressive 42-21 victory at Barron Collier on Friday night, but the win didn’t come without several Trojan miscues.

The Trojans dominated the scoreboard behind big plays from halfback Darian Hall, though Lely lost five fumbles.

It was Barron’s fumble on the 1-yard line in the first quarter that shifted the game’s momentum Lely’s way, but the Trojans responded in kind in the second half. Even Hall had a fumble in the third quarter, when he misplayed a punt and Barron got the ball right back on Lely’s 32-yard line.

Lely didn’t pay too dearly for its five lost fumbles against a Barron team missing its top offensive weapon, tailback Quin Thornton, but the Trojans know they’ll have to clean things up next week against a South Fort Myers team that pummeled Estero 56-7.

SOUTH FORT MYERS 56, ESTERO 7

Plays don’t always evolve as designed, but sometimes they end up working out anyway. A few plays in South Fort Myers’ 56-7 win against Estero on Friday fit that scenario.

With less than five minutes left in a game whose outcome had been long decided, South opted to give the ball to 5-foot-11, 274-pound guard Edward Young in the red zone. Young picked up a few yards, but fumbled. After a mad chase into the end zone, it was Wolfpack sophomore tight end Luke Smith who pounced on the leather for South’s eighth and final touchdown.

Estero enjoyed fortunate bounces, too.

The most noteworthy came early in the third quarter when Wildcats quarterback Will Davis fired a pass that was deflected. The ball landed in the hands of Estero lineman Grady Hartt for a 9-yard gain.

Davis also connected with receiver John Pencil on a 30-yard pass late in the first half. The ball was bobbled by a South defender before Pencil snagged it.

WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN 28, ST. JOHN NEUMANN 25

One of the things that frustrated Celtics coach Steve Howey as he stood on the sidelines in Friday night’s 28-25 season-opening loss was that his team was having success on offense and defense, and yet, the special teams play was interfering.

With players like Austin Nelz, James Maher, Alex Schulze and Mike Davis flying to the ball, it was hard to fault the play of the defense, which allowed Westminster Christian just seven first downs.

That the Warriors were able to score 15 points early without having to snap the football really proved to be Neumann’s downfall. Westminster ran the opening kickoff back 85 yards and a punt back 64 yards for scores. The visitors also got a safety when SJN had a high snap on a punt attempt.

“We were playing well defensively and moving the ball on offense,” Howey said. “And even though we got behind, we were able to hang in there and turn the momentum around.”

— Tom Rife

Ms. Busch- did you happen to go to Barron Collier High School? After reading his article, it certainly doesn't sound like Lely was the team to come away with the win. Maybe next time you could actually give them some credit for beating their longtime rival, rather than pointing out all their mistakes.
