They’re banding together to help one of their own.
A local chef is battling kidney cancer without health insurance, and Naples Originals independent restaurant group is trying to help. The organization will donate 20 percent of the proceeds from their Sept. 11 gift certificate sale to a charitable medical account for his care.
Chef John Farmosa owns Mr. Mom’s Diner at 3560 U.S. 41 E. with his wife Leanne. The couple have owned the restaurant for six years, and despite his illness, it’s still open for business.
About 40 locally-owned restaurants including HB’s on the Gulf at Naples Beach Hotel, Naples Tomato, Greek Gourmet and Bleu Provence sell gift certificates at 30 percent off during the quarterly gift certificate sales.
“I think I’m speaking for a lot of restaurant people when I say that we feel a lot of solidarity,” said Lisa Boet, president of the group. “I, for one, know how difficult it is to have medical insurance and I can put myself in their place. ... It really hit home with a lot of us.”
The gift certificates will go on sale at www.naplesoriginals.com early on Sept. 11, and will be available until they sell out. A gift certificate worth $50 sell for $35 and $25 sell for $17.50.

This is a reflection of all that is good in Naples. Thank you local restaurants for helping a fellow business person and a fellow human being.
