Class Notes: Pete Pizza challenges Biff Burger

Do you know who you’re voting for yet or are you still wrestling with the decision? While Election Day is still a couple of months away, your children (our students) will have to decide who to vote for next month, during School Lunch Week, Oct. 13. So what does that have to do with voting? The theme again this year is “Vote for School Lunch.” It’s a fun, interactive way to make students aware of what they’re eating, as well as get them involved in the voting process. So the five “Vote for School Lunch” candidates are: Gloria Grilled Cheese, Larry Lasagna, Petunia Pita Pocket, Pete Pizza, and Biff Burger. My all-time favorite, Weenie Wink is not on the list. Bummer. Anyway, Biff Burger was last year’s winner, and Pete Pizza won the year before.

During School Lunch Week, students will be reminded that their favorite school lunches are prepared nutritiously. FYI, this past school year, 2.5 million portions of fresh produce were served to Collier County Public School students. Another statistic that just blows me away is that 4.5 million lunches were enjoyed by our students last year. That’s a lot of Biff Burgers and Pete Pizzas.

You are invited to celebrate School Lunch Week, yourself, by enjoying lunch at any public school. To me, school lunch today tastes so much better than it did when I was in school, yet it still only costs $3 for an adult meal. Another reason to visit is the special lunch time musical entertainment provided by middle school bands and orchestras during School Lunch Week. The schedule is being finalized as I write this. We’ll share it with you here in our Class Notes column next week.

I have a couple of other things to share.

• You’ve probably already heard, but we’ll remind you that Oct. 17 will be a school day, a make-up day for the day missed back on Aug.19 because of Tropical Storm Fay.

• If you have a son or daughter in high school, they might enjoy watching a brand new TV show focused on our high school sports scene. “PrepZone Playbook” airs at 5:30 a.m., Tuesday through Friday, and at 6 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday, on The Education Channel, cable 20.
