Lee sheriff to hold ribbon-cutting ceremony Oct. 8 for new jail facility

2501 Ortiz Avenue, Fort Myers

— The Lee County Sheriff's Office will hold a ribbon cutting for its new Ortiz Road jail facility on October 8 at 11 a.m.

The $53 million facility comprises four floors and 768 beds. It is an addition to the 448-bed Core facility, which is on the same property, at 2501 Ortiz Avenue.

Lee County Commissioner Brian Bigelow will serve as master of ceremonies for the ribbon cutting and will be joined by area law enforcement officials.

The new jail will replace the 32-year-old stockade, which has 400 beds and lacks air conditioning. Inmates will be moved from the stockade--which is scheduled to be demolished--into the new facility in the days following the ribbon cutting, jail officials have said.

Even with the new addition, the Lee County jail system will be overcrowded by roughly 9 to 10 percent. Although the jail population fluctuates daily, monthly overcrowding rates in 2008 have hovered around 30 percent or higher.

Only in America... celebrating the opening of a new jail. And yet we cant fund our education system. Just like the song, "our education system has failed, and to hide our guilt, we build more jails, and we shall build yet more"

A lack of education doesn't guarantee (but does increase the chances of) criminal activity. There are also plenty of educated people in jail.

Will they also unveil a plaque as a tribute to the illegal aliens Spectrum was busted with to paint the building?
May Fred Pezeskan can present it.
