It wasn’t exactly a peek backstage, but curious theatergoers got an insider’s perspective into the making of regional plays at the South County Regional Library on Wednesday.
Rachel Burttram, who serves as associate director of Florida Repertory Theatre and plays Laura in its current production of “The Glass Menagerie,” discussed and fielded questions about the production process in the library’s meeting room. Her talk was part of a series of discussions the Florida Rep held with libraries across Lee County. Full story »

Students play principal for a day

Jungle Golf in Fort Myers turned into a zoo Monday afternoon as an onslaught of excited children grabbed putters and painted golf balls, and made their way to the holes. More than 20 children from the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County’s S.T.A.R.S. Complex in Fort Myers were treated to a round miniature golf after school.

The treat was compliments of the Executive Council of Southwest Florida, a group of young professionals who facilitate special events for the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County. The group scored the children not only a round of golf, but also stretched limousines to escort them to the course. Full story »

Bonitan battles disease, hopes to be part of cure

Gregory Ford, 50, sits in a motorized chair in front of a computer screen in his Bonita Bay condo. He has limited use of his hands, enough to click a mouse and use a touch-screen computer. Before being diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, he was a pilot. He fished. He hunted. He served in the Army. Now, he spends his time teaching others about his disease and fighting for a cure — not for himself — but for the 5,600 newly diagnosed patients each year. Full story »

    Since March 6, coyotes have been fingered in a string of attacks against dogs, cats and goats in Lee and Collier counties. Coyotes have killed three small dogs, injured three others, and caused a man who came into contact with the coyote’s saliva and a woman who was bitten by one to have rabies shots.
