Bonita Beach bike riders may soon have a safer path. Lee County Transportation Director Scott Gilbertson said this week that widening and paving the shoulders of Hickory Boulevard, where the 4-laning ends, to Big Hickory Pass are already in place. The wider road already has paved shoulders that serve as bike paths. Full story »

Soon after the convoy of police cars and fire trucks inched its way into the cemetery, and not long after the wall of uniformed officers surrounded the burial site, David Suhan and his 5-year-old son, Kaleb, walked hand-in-hand toward the fresh grave of Andrew Widman. Dressed casually in T-shirts and jean shorts, they hadn’t come as part of the funeral procession. Neither knew the 30-year-old rookie Fort Myers police officer who was shot to death last Friday, and they didn’t know his family. They came, as David said, “to pay respects.” Full story »
