Jobless rates declined in Collier, Lee in April

Jobless rates in Collier and Lee counties fell slightly in April. In Collier, the unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. That was down from 5.1 percent in March, but up from 3.1 percent a year ago. In Lee, the April rate was 6.4 percent. That compared to 6.6 percent in March and 3.7 percent a year ago.

Building of apartments pushes new home construction to 2-year high in U.S.

Construction of new homes posted the biggest increase in more than two years in April, a rare spot of good news amid the worst downturn in housing in more than two decades. The Commerce Department reported Friday that housing construction rose by 8.2 percent in April to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.03 million units. Building of single-family homes continued to weaken, however. The growth came from a big jump in apartment construction. Full story »

Overseas investors buy Tuscany Reserve from WCI

Troubled homebuilder WCI Communities Inc. has sold off its high-end, Italian-inspired Tuscany Reserve community in a multimillion-dollar deal. After several other deals fell through, WCI, headquartered in Bonita Springs, closed on a sale Thursday to a group of European and Middle Eastern investors. The sale price was not disclosed. Observers pegged it at about $65 million. The buyer is AB Naples LLC, which describes itself as a “well-financed international investor group.” Full story »
