Bill Poteet named 2008 Golden Gate Citizen of The Year

‘Be prepared’ is the Boy Scout motto, but longtime Scout turned community advocate Bill Poteet says he was not prepared, Nov. 21, to hear his name given as the 2008 Citizen of the Year during the annual banquet, Nov. 21, at the Naples Elks Lodge. Hillis: Student becomes teacher

The advice to “dust off your resume” isn’t always welcome from one’s boss, but in the case of Shane Hillis, it meant a tremendous opportunity. Hillis was a four-year assistant to Gulf Coast’s head wrestling coach, Mike DiGrigoli, and one of his former wrestlers. Hillis, a 2003 Shark graduate, would joke that the top job would be his when coach “D” was “old and retired.”

A New Perspective: EMS move won’t avoid duplication of service

Last week’s column about the dispute between EMS and fire personnel over providing Advanced Life Support caused quite an uproar. We had letters, calls and comments from as far away as Denver, Colorado, and Wichita, Kansas. A former EMS member from Northern Florida called to complain because he lived in an area where the fire department took over EMS and he had to get out of the profession or take a 50 percent pay cut. EES gives new meaning to ‘line dancing’

Waiting in line has never been this much fun. Each morning, 150 Estates Elementary School students are giving new meaning to the word, “line dancing.” “Our school has lots of soul,” says Bianca Paez, English language learners teacher. “Instead of having the kids sit around, I wanted to incorporate a little fun while they waited for school to start.” So, Paez turned on the music and started dancing.

Helping you put your best foot forward

Dr. Loan Lam never doubted she’d have a career in medicine. After all, she grew up in a family full of physicians and dentists, but she wasn’t sure which kind of medicine she’d practice until midway through college, when a couple of broken toes helped make up her mind. Since then, Lam completed her residency at Yale in 2007 and was recruited by Physicians Regional to open Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Centers in Naples and on Marco. She admits that although she was trained to do a variety of surgeries, she believes in a philosophy of proactive foot care.
