Collier County School Board member Steve Donovan knows voters might not be happy with him or the board.
But he doesn’t want voters to punish the students and the teachers. “(Funding for) public education has been decimated. We’re bleeding. If you wish to support public education, don’t make this about me or the board,” he said. “If you give us this money, we will provide for (the teachers and students).” Full story »

Collier school board accepts settlement with Baker

The Collier County School Board voted 4-1 Thursday evening to accept a $555,000 settlement in the Baker lawsuit. Board Vice Chairwoman Pat Carroll was the lone dissenter. Under the terms of the agreement, the school district will pay Baker $555,000 and Baker will acknowledge that the district did not violate Florida’s open records law. School Board Attorney Richard Withers said continuing the lawsuit was not in the best interest of the public. Full story »

A little girl’s pigtails swing as she cranes her neck to snag a look at the pictures as the book swivels her way, supported by the reader’s hands. The class is captivated, silent, focused. Lee school unions freeze salaries, health benefits

Lee County school district employees waiting for their annual raise shouldn’t hold their breath. Representatives from the union-affiliated Teachers Association of Lee County and Support Personnel Association of Lee County, which represent nearly all of the district’s 11,000 employees, decided Thursday to extend negotiations meant to solve the district’s state Legislature-induced budget crisis until around Sept. 30. The extension will also put on hold any changes to district employees’ health benefit plans and any raises the employees would have received beginning July 1. Full story »

More than 40 protest plan to outsource school custodians

Hoping to draw attention to the district’s decision to accept proposals to outsource custodial services, more than 40 custodians stood at the intersection of Pine Ridge Road and Osceola Trail Thursday morning to protest the idea.
