Chris Isaak brings his rock croon to Barbara B. Mann
Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008
Chris Isaak, 52, was probably just born at the wrong time. Nearly 25 years after he got his start with “Silvertone,” he descends on the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall Tuesday night with a show that’s likely to be more of a singing time capsule than the set of a viable recording artist. Full story »

Review: Bumpy ride, but ‘21A’ rewards viewers in the end
Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008
It was a dark and sweltering night. Two shots ring out. A man falls. The fate of passengers of a Minneapolis bus hang in the balance. There were multiple gunshots, multiple characters and not a lot of space in Theatre Conspiracy’s matchbox-sized performance space Saturday night as Jesse St. Louis worked the one-man show “21A.” St. Louis was in fifth gear all night, but the writing seemed stubbornly stuck in neutral and the playACTION?, like the bus it’s set in, never left the station. Coming soon: Scheduled September releases in theaters and on DVD
Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008
September is usually kind of a tweener month for movies. One foot is still in the summer blockbuster season and another is inching toward the fall Oscar sweepstakes. This year is no different. But it’s also a good time to go to the movies because so many genres are represented. Rom-coms, action flicks, black comedies, Oscar hopefuls and Tyler Perry are all on the schedule. Full story »

King Richards Family Fun Park holds benefit concert to fight cancer
Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008
Granted, not everyone can appreciate classic rock. However, the beauty of fighting cancer is lost on no one. That’s why a weekend concert at King Richard’s Family Fun Park was a real crowd pleaser. In a two-day long show featuring local garage bands and touring artists with ties to the area, Led Zeppelin fans and families touched by cancer united to raise money for LIGHT, or Long-term Impact through the Gift of Hope & Treatment. So you think you can sing?: Give Bonita Springs own version of ‘American Idol’ a try
Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008
It’s a noisy and crowded night at Cgrape Wine and Coffee Bar in Bonita Springs. Surprisingly so since it’s a weeknight in the usually slow off-season month of August. But this Thursday, every table is full of customers sipping on coffee, beer or wine. It’s a diverse group. Both young and old have come out tonight. Full story »
Press Play: Meditations on music
Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008
It’s impossible to overemphasize the impact Jerry Wexler had on pop music. He helped create and promote what has been the soundtrack to our lives. When he died last week, at 91, he took with him a library of musical knowledge. As the saying goes: He’d forgotten more about music than most people ever know. Full story »
Review: ‘Hedwig’ star a glam diva of raw power
Monday, Aug. 18, 2008
When the last screams died and final howls faded, a flushed Michael McAvoy closed the door on a rollicking, energetic, organic (and possibly orgasmic) night of rock ‘n roll inside Sugden Theater’s Tobye Studio Friday. Full story »

Drama on the edge: Local production of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” ventures into challenging territory
Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008
In what is perhaps a theater first, director Paul Graffy’s most pressing note to his leading man was that he needed to be more narcissistic. After all, how many actors need to be prompted to be more self-assured. But to play Hedwig, the title character of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Michael McAvoy is going to need to reach stratospheric heights of self-appreciation. He’s also going to need a little grooming.
