Sheila’s out shopping: Hi ho, silver!
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Platinum is just out of reach these days, and gold jewelry is so expensive, too. But heirloom silver, that’s a different story. I found quality pieces that not only look great, but make me feel good when I wear them. My first purchase was Trafic, a necklace and bracelet by Peggy Huyn Kinh at Christofle Pavillon. I enjoy the length of the piece and like the weight of the circles ($615). It looks stunning with an evening-out ensemble and yet, still looks fine with a tank top and cargo pants. The bracelet ($760) has heavier round links and makes every outfit I wear special. Full story »

‘I just want to keep going’: Ben Stone, 20, loves Irish step dancing and, while he still can, he’s gonna dance
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
It started when an Irish step dance judge told Ben Stone he had horrible flexibility during his performance. Stone’s solution was to stretch his legs in a split for up to five minutes at a time. Over time, his muscles relaxed and expanded. His kicks reached higher. That was good news for his dance routine, but bad news for his cheek. Full story »

Doris Reynolds: The taste of memory
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
His Honor, Mayor Bill Barnett, has declared May as Naples History Month. The proclamation was read at the gazebo in Old Naples earlier this month with a crowd of history mavens eager to spread the word about our unique and fascinating past.
One of the most tantalizing facets of our history concerns the vittles those modern pioneers subsisted on. From its very beginnings at the turn of the 19th century, Naples has always attracted adventuresome folk, who appreciated solitude in a wilderness more than the luxuries of modern life. Full story »

Our World: Grand illusion
Sunday, May 11, 2008
In a darkened hallway, a beam of light and the scent of cigarette smoke escape through a partially closed door. Inside, two queens sit semi-nude, basking in the warmth from the light reflected off two vanity mirrors. When you are a drag queen, vanity comes with the territory, and preparing to be seen requires careful concentration. Full story »

Forever Mom: With God’s help and inner strength, Katherine Smith, 71, raises her second family
Saturday, May 10, 2008
Perhaps there was a day when Katherine Scott Smith wasn’t a mother. It wasn’t when she was growing up in Liberty, Ky., the fourth of 14 children in the familial cycle of dressing and feeding and minding the younger ones. Her many siblings — two of them dead now — still smile down at her in her Golden Gate living room from walls crammed with framed photos. It certainly wasn’t after she met her husband-to-be, widower Russell Smith, who brought his toddler son to their relationship in 1954. It isn’t even now, at age 71, that Smith has outgrown, retired from or forsaken motherhood, even though four of her children left home before she and her late husband moved to Florida in 1980. She now has six children in her 1,200-square-foot home, four of them younger than 12. Full story »
