Editorial: Baker settlement only pleases those who want case finished
Saturday, May 17, 2008
An issue that started with finances as the furthest thing from the minds of three Collier County School Board members ends with them and a fourth member having finances as Priority One. Full story »
Editorial: Don’t limit preservation with Conservation 2020
Saturday, May 17, 2008
Conservation 2020 has been a success story in Lee County. On the books since 1996, when Lee voters approved an annual half-mill levy on themselves to buy and preserve green space, some 19,000 acres have been set aside for $140 million. Full story »
Editorial: Child safety season
Saturday, May 17, 2008
This is prime time for child safety programs. With summer around the corner, there will be fewer school-supervised activities and we might be inclined to let our guard down. Full story »
Editorial: Recent string of successes bodes well for new school
Thursday, May 15, 2008
Build it and they will come. The tag line from the movie “Field of Dreams” appears to be scoring for Ave Maria University, as well. Struggling to meet enrollment goals at an attractive yet temporary campus since 2003, Ave Maria’s inaugural year at its permanent site between Naples and Immokalee is delivering the desired results. Editorial: Change the GOP deserves
Thursday, May 15, 2008
To boost their morale and their poor prospects this fall, congressional Republicans had a little ceremony at the Capitol to roll out a new slogan for the party: “The Change You Deserve.” Not only was the slogan uncomfortably close to Barack Obama’s “Change You Can Believe In,” it was also the trademarked ad slogan for Effexor, a prescription antidepressant whose side effects — nausea, irritability, etc. — the Democrats gleefully recited. It’s been that kind of year, actually two years, for the Republicans. Full story »
Editorial: Improvement is possible for Vanderbilt Beach
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
Collier County Commissioner Frank Halas came forward with his idea for a fishing pier at Vanderbilt Beach. Though the concept had some appeal, he neglected to consult with as many neighbors as possible early on and was unable to earn their support later. Full story »
Editorial: Hard work rewarded
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
Congratulations to Joseph Cofield of Bonita Springs Middle School. He has been named Florida State Educator of the Year by the Professional Educators of Florida. Full story »
Editorial: Petroleum reserve strategy flawed
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
Congress has taken an ineffectual step toward curbing gasoline prices. This week it directed President Bush to suspend filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. That the gesture was pure public relations is evidence by the lopsided vote, 97-1 in the Senate and 385-25 in the House. Bush opposed the legislation, but he’s not running for reelection and the lawmakers are and they’re under pressure to do something, anything, about gasoline prices even if it’s almost wholly symbolic, as this is. Editorial: Good — and funny — sports
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Two things you can say about politics in Bonita Springs: 1. The victors are gracious to the losers; 2. The victors, as well as the losers, as pretty funny. Doggone funny. Full story »
Editorial: Local donations show heart despite the down economy
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Southwest Floridians come through again. We always respond when the chips are down for our neighbors, and Saturday’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive finale is no exception. Full story »
Editorial: MPO wisely places comfort ahead of technology
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
How refreshing. How reassuring to see that government really can put the people’s interests first. When confronted with a choice the other day between a study of a bus tracking system that would advise would-be passengers whether the buses are on time, transportation planners opted for building shelters — to keep would-be passengers out of the sun and rain. Editorial: Golden Eagles show what teamwork can accomplish
Monday, May 12, 2008
Been there, done that. But not quite like this. Collier County, whose high-school and all-star teams have made the community a softball capital, has cheered dozens of titles over the years. Full story »
Editorial: Ahem, Lee officials, please let Collier speak for itself
Monday, May 12, 2008
Quick now: What was the funnier story in Saturday’s editions? The story about the suspected koi thieves who returned to the scene of the crime to affirm their value, or the Lee County officials trying to speak for money that half belongs to Collier County? Full story »
Editorial: A holiday from common sense
Sunday, May 11, 2008
The gasoline-tax holiday as proposed by Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain may be good politics, but it’s bad economics. Very bad economics. Full story »
Editorial: Proposed Oakes solution is a workable plan
Sunday, May 11, 2008
The stretch of Immokalee Road from Interstate 75 east to Oakes Boulevard can be difficult for motorists to navigate in North Naples. Full story »
